UPDATE: As noted by Tony Bender, in the comments section, the 2005 Texas 10 Charity Tour is on again, thanks to the overwhelming support of the disc golf community and numerous Texas Tournament Directors.

The Disc Golf Tournament Director of the Year, Chris Himing, announced that the nations largest and most ambitous tourament series (The Texas 10 Charity Tour) will not be played in 2005 because of lack of corporate sponsorship.

Last year, Texas disc golfers raised and donated $40,000 dollars to the Lance Armstrong Foundation through the Texas 10. Countless new players were introduced to the sport, to include numerous women and juniors.

It’s embarrassing and sad to watch ’sports’ like the spelling bee, paintball, and dog shows get such big corporate sponsorship and ESPN airtime, while one of the fastest growing sports in the US can’t get enough support to back something as meaningful and succesful as the Texas 10 Disc Golf Charity Series.

Chris, I know I speak for thousands of other Texas disc golfers for all your previous hard work. I look forward to seeing you on the course next year. Maybe you’ll actually get to play more this year.

That truly is a disappointment. The tour was for a great cause and truly did great things for disc golf. It’ll be a little while before a fitting replacement is to be found anywhere.

Yeah, Shane, it does suck. But word from Chris today is that maybe, just maybe, the tour might come together this year after all…I think through the efforts of multiple TDs running one or more of the events for Chris.

You missed some spectacular Christmas disc golf weather here in Austin this last week…upper 60s, perfectly sunny, with hardly a breeze to speak of. It’s perfect disc golf weather like this that has to make you miss living and playing here.

Hope you’re having some good weather way up there too!

It’s back on… “By the players, for the players….”

Thanks, Tony…it’s updated. I’d hate for someone to not play because they saw this post.

See you at McGregor next weekend.

Got something you want to say?
