I haven’t said anything about Ward Churchill yet, but I’ll start with a re-wording of this headline from Bob’s Place:

Ward Churchill - fake Indian and genuine Nazi

Should the bucket-o-scum be fired for his hate-filled rhetoric? No. Free speech and all that stuff.
The bucket-o-scum should never have been hired in the first place.

Should *CU fire the bucket-o-scum for incompetence, lying about being a Native American, and for making up his own research?
Yes, they should.

UPDATE: ajm - errata non grata, a graduate student in journalism at the University of Colorado, who fondly refers to her university as *Controversy University points out that CU has had a tough year:

…it’s been a pretty intense few years here: the #1 Party School school debacle, the Barnett football fiasco, the dead freshman at a frat house, and now the professor who invokes 9.11 to make his point.

In this post, she mentions that Ward Churchill and his security detail of actual Native Americans spoke on campus last night. Again, she points out failings at CU:

The university won’t protect girls who get raped, won’t appropriately deal with the football program, but they WILL try to expunge a divergent political voice. It’s sad, plain and simple.

Ward has seen the outside of the cave we all live in and those of us still in the cave looking at the shadows on the cave walls don’t like what we are seeing. The truth… no one knows the truth, but those who have tried to bring people out to see a different opinion that those we hear every day will be killed by those who are still in the cave of reality.

Ward is just another Brother Martin Luther King Jr, another Abe Lincoln, another who ever you want to name for being on the outside of the cave at the time of their death.

Why I’ll Probably Stick with the Cable Company

In case you haven’t heard, I hate the cable company.

However, there are reasons–that seem sensible to me–that I’ll probably stick with them, assuming they ever get my connection back up and running.

[...] Steve offers some anecdotes as to why he thinks that Austin is still thriving in its own weirdness. The problem is that almost all of the things that these people think make Austin “weird” aren’t all that unique to Austin. Do you really think Austin is the only city in America with a homeless transvestite? (my old neighborhood in Houston had a gang of ‘em that worked the corner near my house). Having enough 1960’s gray-haired hippies to staff yet another protest on the steps of the Capitol building isn’t something owned by Austin’s aging Professional Protestor circuit — go to any big college town in America; our nation’s universities are over-run with them — they’re called Professors.
