The PDGA and other disc golf groups and programs (such as E.D.G.E.)—are trying hard to overcome the stereotype of disc golf as a sport for dope-smoking hippies and college kids. And in many ways, they have gone a long ways towards improving the visibility and image of disc golf and disc golfers.
If we want to grow as a sport and gain the attention of potential sponsors, we have to clean up our image.
But it seems that the only time you hear about disc golf in the news, dope is involved.
In Grapevine, TX this weekend, at Bear Creek Park, a disc golfer was busted by his own Labrador Retriever:
Matthew Porter of Richland Hills and two friends were playing Frisbee golf in a suburban park Monday when a police officer who thought he smelled burning marijuana began questioning them.
As the officer was checking for outstanding warrants, J.D. [the guy's dog] waded into a nearby creek and emerged with a plastic bag containing the drug.
First of all, it’s disc golf, not frisbee golf (thankfully they didn’t call it frolf).
Secondly, I’m glad to see cops patrolling disc golf courses for drug use. I’d like to see more of it. Especially here in Austin.
Memo to APD: If you want to bust a bunch of people smoking dope on a regular basis, go undercover as a disc golfer, and hang out at Pease Park. You can probably make a bust on 3 out of every 4 groups of golfers that play through.
I don’t have a problem with dope smoking. Just do it at home, guys. Not in our public parks. We were out there today with my niece and nephew, and I’d hate to have to whip your ass for pulling out your weed in front of the kids. Plus, if enough of you idiots are busted for smoking dope while playing disc golf, the city might consider pulling the course because it encourages illegal behavior. And then I’d have to kick your ass for that.

I am shocked - shocked! - that dope smokers combine toking and disc golf at Pease Park. All this time, I thought they were just scruffy guys with big appetites for lots of junk food
Seriously though, I think you’re right on about the enforcement issue.
