The PDGA and other disc golf groups and programs (such as E.D.G.E.)—are trying hard to overcome the stereotype of disc golf as a sport for dope-smoking hippies and college kids. And in many ways, they have gone a long ways towards improving the visibility and image of disc golf and disc golfers.

If we want to grow as a sport and gain the attention of potential sponsors, we have to clean up our image.

But it seems that the only time you hear about disc golf in the news, dope is involved.

In Grapevine, TX this weekend, at Bear Creek Park, a disc golfer was busted by his own Labrador Retriever:

Matthew Porter of Richland Hills and two friends were playing Frisbee golf in a suburban park Monday when a police officer who thought he smelled burning marijuana began questioning them.

As the officer was checking for outstanding warrants, J.D. [the guy's dog] waded into a nearby creek and emerged with a plastic bag containing the drug.

First of all, it’s disc golf, not frisbee golf (thankfully they didn’t call it frolf).

Secondly, I’m glad to see cops patrolling disc golf courses for drug use. I’d like to see more of it. Especially here in Austin.

Memo to APD: If you want to bust a bunch of people smoking dope on a regular basis, go undercover as a disc golfer, and hang out at Pease Park. You can probably make a bust on 3 out of every 4 groups of golfers that play through.

I don’t have a problem with dope smoking. Just do it at home, guys. Not in our public parks. We were out there today with my niece and nephew, and I’d hate to have to whip your ass for pulling out your weed in front of the kids. Plus, if enough of you idiots are busted for smoking dope while playing disc golf, the city might consider pulling the course because it encourages illegal behavior. And then I’d have to kick your ass for that.

I am shocked - shocked! - that dope smokers combine toking and disc golf at Pease Park. All this time, I thought they were just scruffy guys with big appetites for lots of junk food ;-)

Seriously though, I think you’re right on about the enforcement issue.

Yeah, I’m catching flak on the PDGA message boards for taking this stance. But that’s because most of the flak is coming from people who are dope smokers.

I stated that I would love to see cops go undercover in our cities’ parks, posing as disc golfers. It wouldn’t take very long for word-of-mouth to spread, and you’d see a lot less dope smoking in those parks (and you do see a lot if you play disc golf—I have seen or smelled a disc golfer toke up nearly every time I have ever played a non-sanctioned event or casual round—and that’s thousands upon thousands of rounds of disc golf over the last 10 years). People think that it would hurt our sport to have this kind of negative publicity. My arguement, is that this is already how the general non-disc-golf-playing public perceives us. The cops coming in and cleaning up this illegal behavior would do more to help our image than it would to hurt it.

Idiot pot heads. Go home and smoke your dope. I don’t care. Just stay out of our public parks.

While I don’t want to see undercover cops in the parks, I admit that this is where it might be heading to get a real grasp on the issue.

I do think they’d grab more alcohol offenders in Houston than marijuana. Are Austin’s parks dry?

A few parks are specifically dry, and you’re right, they probably would be able to write more tickets for alcohol than for drugs. For that matter at Pease Park, they could probably write just as many tickets for dogs off their leash (outside of the leash free part of the park) as they could for anything.

But having a six pack or two cases of beer would result in the same ticket or citation (I doubt there would be any arrests). You would be violating a city ordiance with the beer, and would probably just get a warning. But drugs are illegal, and could land you in jail. There is, legally speaking, a big difference.

There’s little difference, it just depends on where you stand. Alcoholics cause more trouble and waste considerably more police time then even the most hardcore tokers. In Britain every night people spill onto the streets and cause havoc and vandalism after a night drinking. The difference is in social acceptability and government taxability. Free the weed.

Wow. I can’t believe that your IP resolves back to Amsterdam, Martin….and that you’re in favor of legal pot. Way to perpetuate the stereotype.

Ever see a empty pot can laying around in the bushes?

i never saw an empty pot can lying around, but it sure is easy to find an empty beer can that can be converted into a pipe in about 15 seconds. thanks beer drinkers for trashing out parks!

Undercover Cops? Are you F’n kidding me? What did a guy smoking pot ever do to you? Nothing? Oh okay then F@#k Off!!! If your precious sensabilities are so easily disturbed perhaps you should check yourself into a mental hospital. Our sport isn’t hurting in the least, dope or no dope, in fact it is growing substantially every year. Since you know where all the dope is why don’t you just stay away from it if it bothers you so much. Too bad it isn’t illegal to be a closed minded A-hole. If it were you’d be in prison and the rest of us pot heads could live with a lot less whining Robbie.

Bailey…put down the pipe, get off the couch, go get a job, and shut the fuck up.

I thought Heroin was the drug of choice where you live in Plano? Are you sure it’s only a little weed you’ve been smoking?

So, did you ever get your dog back?

[...] *** Why is this the question of the day? Because someone found my blog by searching for “can dogs smoke weed” on Google. Maybe more disturbing than someone out there wondering if he can shotgun some weed to Fido, is that my blog was the first hit returned by google on that search string — albeit for a story about a disc golfer who was busted for possession of weed after his dog showed Cops where he had hidden his stash. Pot is a normal for children to see. It’s no different than a child seeing someone drinking a cup of coffee. People that tell thier children to avoid seeing marijuana are just perpetuating that we have no freedom. Where is your tolerance? Do you hate Iraqi’s, Jews, gays and lesbians too? We have too many rules. Pot smokers never hurt anyone at the park. Go to a ball golf course and watch the drunks drive their carts like maniacs around your children. Get educated and become tolerated.

Smoking pot is relaxing after trading 1.5 million shares a day.

You guys are a bunch of lame wuss bags. “Please dont smoke weed because it offends me and my christian brethren. I am trying to keep my kids sheltered from the world so that they will grow up thinking that people who smoke weed are evil. Its ok for me to sit around the house and and get wasted on liquor because jesus said it was. It is not ok for other people to make choices that effect only their lives. Praise jesus.” Bunch of hypocritical bible beaters.

Endlink, I’m agnostic. No bible beating around here.

But I still know enough to know that “drugs are bad”. And illegal.

Does Not Matter (what a perfect name for an unemployed dope smoking college kid) —

I’ve read similar excuses from pedophiles — hey, they’re not hurting “you”, and it “shouldn’t be illegal”, and the rest of you who don’t do it “just don’t understand” those that do.

The fact of the matter is disc golf and smoking a little weed go hand in hand. I have been playing disc golf for almost ten years and I have seen the sport grow. Most of the people that beging the sport start out by going to the local disc golf course in high school or college. Most high school and college kids drink and smoke. If you take away these important aspects to the game you will see less people playing the sport. Kids will be kids let them live their life. I have played in over 50 disc golf tournaments, most of the players will have a drink or a smoke to relax before and after the round. This also goes for the top pros of the sport. You must be ignorant if you think it is not going to happen. I guess i will end this with a quote that I heard from a top pro disc golfer after he won $100 at a tournament. “I am the biggest pothead here and I won by two strokes”.

f@#@ the us goverment

Search my IP address Robbie, i dont care, just gave you my name too, maybe you can come find me and “whip my ass” .

Check it out, I understand that you dont want your children seeing this never ending madness marijuana shannigans, but you need to understand that your childrens generation will be FEASTING on the sweet herb. Pot smoking is never going to stop, and it isnt harmful in ANYWAY (if you use a vaporizer :P), so your children seeing this bad stuff…isnt that bad.

So, Robbie, and others against the herb, do some research, roll a spliff, and use your CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS as a goddamn American, duecies

oh yeah, before you can shoot the unemployed stereo type shit, Ive been working since I was 11, so get off my nuts.

I have to say I’m with Robbie on this one. While potheads are not likely to cause trouble, on the DGC they are still a nuisance. Every time i go and play a round i have to deal with these clowns smoking out on the tee pads and they have no etiquette. I find myself waiting 5-10 minutes for them to finish one hole because they are so baked they don’t realize we are behind them. Even if they do happen to notice your behind their group of seven on every hole waiting on them they don’t offer to let you play through because they are higher than a camel’s pussy and don’t give to shits about the world around them.

Got something you want to say?
