I dont know you but I have enjoyed reading your posts all day. Im a moderate democrat. I was on the stage with Coulter and bit my tounge the entire time. However, Im glad that idiot went to jail, we went way overboard.

I enjoyed the entire event. Even the back-row dissidents gave the event added flavor.

I think it’s unfortunate—and I think Coulter nailed it—that a certain sect of Liberals has seemingly lost all ability to formulate rational thought or engage in intelligent debate, and instead are reduced to physical assault, obscenity, and body noises.

I was glad to see Coulter speaking at UT to help provide the balance and diversity of views that are essential to a university.

Actually, Preston…Yes. I , do hold a grudge against this idiot and his ilk.

I’m just holding the little habitual criminal accountable for his continued disregard for the values and laws of our community.

Laws that he has flagrantly disregarded and then flaunted in our faces.

He’s scared that he’ll lose his financial aid because of his recent arrest for marijuana possession (in his on-campus dorm room). Well, he should. This is twice in the last month that he’s been arrested on campus for illegal behavior (and YES, his obscene comments and gestures were illegal in our city).

He’s a kid who has no respect for the police officers who protect and serve our city. He thinks it’s his right—nay, his duty—to stand up and raise his voice in opposition to what he perceives to be injustices and abuses of power. Well, guess what kids? It’s a two-way street.

And it’s our turn to stand up against this future domestic terrorist.

I don’t think that there is anyway he could be convicted of obscenity in this case because of the explicitly political nature of the event.

Miller v. California gives three standards for labeling speech ‘obscene’ (which I presume would be the only way that he could be arrested. ‘Disturbing the peace’ would be awfully heavy handed). One of the tests in Miller is: ‘Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.’

Like I said, for it to be legally considered ‘obscene’ it has to be devoid of political value. That doesn’t mean that the comment wasn’t offensive. But it does mean he won’t be convicted for saying it. The organizers had the right to remove him from the auditorium but I’m willing to bet that’s the end of it.

In the context of Ann Coulter advocating prohibitions against gay marriage and the ‘proper’ role for conservative women- it would be a piece of cake for a decent lawyer to argue that his comments were political and therefore ‘protected’ speech.

I’m curious- what do you want him arrested for? Why do want him arrested?

You are outraged at the coach who used racist comments as am I; yet, not this. Quite frankly, I don’t “get” your selective outrage.

Well, I’m not outraged by this because I think that Ann Coulter intends to provoke- that’s her schtik. Like I said, I support removing this guy from the auditorium- she has the right to lecture in a ticketed event in what passes for civility.

Mr. Raj doesn’t seem like the brightest bulb- but I suppose I understand what the guy was attempting to say: something about conservative hypocrisy regarding the ’sanctity of marriage’ including any types of ‘deviant’ behavior while excluding a normal relationship if the partners happen to be of the same sex. Or something.

You say in another thread that you’ve seen Liz Phair live- did the Austin Police attempt to arrest her? I’m sure there was a great deal more obscenity on the stage that night than what Mr. Raj said.

If not, you have to believe that the police is selectively enforcing the law to prevent political speech that they disagree with. That’s not a role I believe that the police should have.

Once again, in our state we have an obscentity law. Title 9, Chaper 42 of our State Penal code clearly spells out what our community (not NY, not CA, not MI) considers to be disorderly conduct.

§ 42.01. DISORDERLY CONDUCT. (a) A person commits an
offense if he intentionally or knowingly:
(1) uses abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar
language in a public place, and the language by its very utterance
tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace;
(2) makes an offensive gesture or display in a public
place, and the gesture or display tends to incite an immediate
breach of the peace;

Liz Phair singing about blow jobs was not intended to, nor did it have the effect of, inciting an immediate breach of the peace.

Raj’s behavior did exactly that. Do you really not understand the difference between a rock concert and a lecture hall? Or are you just being difficult?

I agree that both the coach’s comments and Raj’s comments are offensive- I wouldn’t say either in front of my mother. But I will say that they both have the right to make fools of themselves publicly.

The main difference between the two is that the coach wasn’t threatened with jail. I defend Raj only because the essence of a democracy is the ability to say your piece and he is potentially facing jailtime for his remarks- not because of the content of the remarks.

You don’t get it, Preston. Not all speech is protected speech. You don’t have the right to say anything you want, wherever you want, whenever you want.

Raj wasn’t arrest simply for what he said. He was arrested, by the letter of the laws of our state, for the intent of his words and actions. The intent of his actions was to incite and provoke the peace. If you could have witnessed the scene and felt the emotions that erupted after his speech, you would know that he suceeded in his intent to disrupt the event and incite the crowd.

If you still don’t understand the very simple tenant that not all speech is protected and free, and if your reading comprehension doesn’t allow you to read the letter of our law and to apply it to what Raj did…then I’m just beating a dead horse.

As for your predictions about the pending charges: I don’t expect they’ll stick. This happened during an open forum. Mr. Raj, from what I can tell, was using a microphone provided by the organizers of the event. He asked a question that was appropriate within the context of the discussion, albeit using a word that was inappropriate for the delicate ears of the many young republicans in attendance. If Mr. Raj does have a pending possession charge, as the piss- poor imitation of a Hunter Thompson dispatch you cite as evidence suggests, I can’t see it affecting this case. Nor do I see this latest charge, or his recent PartyCampus story, affecting a possession case or (fictional) plea deal. I doubt anybody working in the Travis County DA’s office pays as much attention to PartyCampus.com, though clearly they should if they want to know what’s going on in this world. Hell, anyone with any sense knows that Ronnie Earle and his bunch of Tom DeLay hating-pinkos over there in the DA’s office get their news from [ed. offensive and irrelevant link deleted]. What the hell were you thinking, Preston?

Finally, concerning Raj or PartyCollege.com pulling his stories…what do you expect? What if, instead of posting this, I posted 100 comments on your site calling you all sorts of obscene names, making racist remarks about your ethnic heritage, suggesting that your mother should have aborted you, floating death threats, etc? You know, all the stuff that appeared on their site in their wake of your post. I bet you’d pull the thread. Lest you forget, dude, PartyCampus.com is a commercial venture…probably a doomed commercial venture, but a commercial venture nonetheless. I expect Mr. Raj was looking out for the interests of the capitalist pig-editor/publishers, who exploit his labor for the purpose of gaining revenue from beer company and internet porn advertisements, when he requested they pull his stories from their site. Well, Raj sounds like a jerk. On the other hand, I’m against the drug war, and if Raj lived in a truly free country, he would be able to have whatever drugs he wanted.

If I have to choose between a small percentage of the population doing drugs or a small percentage of the population continuing to do drugs while the rest of us are forced to pee in cups on demand to prove we DON’T do drugs, then I’ll take the first option.

Raj should, however, learn not to type anything he isn’t willing to defend.

Yeah, I read Ajai’s response. And it’s a bunch of bullshit and lies (or embellishments, as Raj prefers to call them). I was there, and his version just doesn’t quite mesh with what I saw.

As to PartyCampus, yeah, it’s obviously not a serious literary site. But if Ajai was just writing a humorus story, why would he have any need to pull it down?

Let’s take a closer look at it, because there were a lot of facts in his little story. The RA called the cops because of the smell of dope coming from Raj and his roomate Charles’ room — FACT. He was taken to the Travis County jail and charged with Posession of Marijuana less than 2 oz. (class B misdemeanor) — FACT. His lawyer’s name was Thad Thomason — FACT.

So, how were we, the reader, supposed to know what part of his ’story’ was embellishment and which part was fact?

Of course, the part he is now claiming to be an ‘embellishment’ is his plea bargain with the DA. Of course this is the one thing not verifiable in his open records. But it’s also the one thing that the DA might have a problem with him writing about, which is why I believe little Raj really pulled it down. Because he was adivsed to take it down.

I have always found Coulter entertaining… but I could never take her seriously after reading the second book.

But this guy Mr. Raj is a joke. A wiser man would just assume he is the “poster child” for her comments that are something like everybody is “a liberal until they get a job and have to pay taxes.”

So, what is the story now about Mr. Raj? Is he working for a living having lost his financial support to go to school or is he still trying to limit his abilities just to complaining?

Speaking as an acquaintance of Ajai Raj, somebody who has actually met and hung out with him on several occasions, I can tell you that he’s not an idiot. Read his article “An Open Letter To Anyone Who Gives A Shit About Justice” again, and you’ll see it there in plain english: did Ajai consider himself a champion for a larger liberal cause? No. He intentionally lowered himself to the level of Coulter’s semi-coherent venomous ramblings in order to make a point about the current state of political discourse. Childish? Certainly, by Raj’s own admission. Effective? Absolutely.

As to your continued spoutings about Ajai being arrested ACCORDING TO THE LAW, history will show there is a great deal of difference between written law and justice. It may be legal for Ajai to be charged with disorderly conduct, but is it justified? Hardly.
