The 4th-Annual Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival has revealed it’s 2005 lineup.

I have not missed a day of this festival in its first three years, and will attend all three days again this year. But looking at the 2005 lineup, I’m mostly unimpressed and somewhat dissapointed.

This year’s headliners include: Coldplay, Widespread Panic, Oasis, The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers Band, Wilco, Jimmy Cliff, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, and Lucinda Williams.

Of the above mentioned bands, I’m a big fan of Lyle Lovett and Lucinda Williams. I’ll probably also watch Robert Randolph.

Some of the other artists that I’ll make a point to watch this year include: Robert Earl Keen, Blue October, Tegan and Sara (one of my wife’s favorites), and Bruce Robison (one of my favorites).

Very few other band catch my eye. I’ll have to start exploring some of the music from bands on the list that I’m not familiar with and see which ones I might want to catch live.

Noteably missing from this year’s lineup are: Patty Griffin (who has played at all three previous festivals), Willie Nelson (who has never played at an ACL Festival), Sheryl Crow (the ACL promotor—CSE—is also Lance Armstrong’s agent), and Los Lonely Boys (local Austin boys who have had a huge year).

Bands that have performed in the past three years that I loved that are not back this year: Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Liz Phair, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tift Merrit, and Trish Murphy.

If you haven’t been to the ACL Music Fest, but are planning on attending this year, make sure to read last year’s entry on how to “Do the ACL Music Festival“. I also wrote about the 2003 Festival in my now defunct Online Journal.

I’m surprised with the overlap in genres with SXSW. I would have expected a little more country/Americana angle from Austin City Limits.

I’ll have to get to Austin one day. Unfortunately my impression of Texas is mostly of the Ft. Worth/ Dallas suburbs… bleh.

The festival did start off with more of a an Americana, Texas Music feel to it. But it’s slowly being turned into Lolopalooza (whic the the promoters, CSE, also acquired the rights to this year).

i love this year’s lineup!!!! i’ll gladly take lyle, lucinda, steve earle and john prine over anybody, anytime, anyplace! i couldn’t have designed a better lineup.

Now I’ll agree with you on the ones you’ve listed. Especially Mr. Lovett, who I think is my favorite artist of this year’s crop.

But with few exceptions to the four you’ve listed (add Robert Earl Keen, and Bruce Robison), there aren’t that many other of the 100+ bands that I give a rat’s ass about.

In year’s past I could pick out 8-10 artist per day that I was thrilled to see.

Line-up looks good this year with someting for everyone.

Festival has some quality big name bands like Oasis and Coldplay, which may not be to everyone’s liking but they are to me, especially Oasis.

Some up and comers like Kasabian and Bloc Party. Also has some good downtempo music the Doves and Thievery Coporation….add some Robert Earl Keen who I have seen a few times and is always great. Ontop of these bands you have some legends in Buddy Guy and Jimmy Cliff with also Robert Randolf. Also got many locals bands with different styles that will add to the mix.

Looking at the line-up it seems very good and has a lot of different types of music, especially when you consider all these bands are playing over three days and it only costs $85 which is a great price. Apparently ACL Festival have also reduced the amount of people coming into the festival to make it a better experience for everyone (wait to see if this happens of not is another matte).

Looking forward to the festival already.

My feelings are mixed on it as well,, Really look forward to seeing Jimmy Cliff and Robert Randolf and many others, but there was few I had hoped to see , not make it to the list, that I know are touring,, John Hiatt and Beck being top of that list. There seems to be a lot of British Bands this time around, a bit too much fo my tastes, but I will need to sample some music before I completely judge. Other bands I know,, which i recommend,, Mofro (Played last year), Thievery Corp, Zap mama, Buddy Guy (seen twice, scorches), black keys.

its gonna be a good time, and I am glad they cut attendence down by 10000 a day.

My main complaint is the number of bands reappearing from SXSW.

SXSW is what it is. And what it is is not my kind of music. I hate that the ACL Fest thinks it has to copycat or piggyback on that other music festival.

I kind of felt initially, in the first two years of ACL Fest, that SXSW was for the kids, and ACL Fest was for us older folks. Looks like the kids are the target demographic for ACL too.

Though I have not gone to SXSW, I whole-heartedly agree that they changed their focus towards youth way too much. I do enjoy the variety, but after listening to some of the bands, I am way out of my punk/rebellious music years, and more enjoy a well written tune, performed by great artists. I am 39, not quite old foggey, and one of my favorite bands was slightly stoopid, last year, but they were an exception. When will they figure out that the older demographics is where it’s at? We got way more money, and more likely to buy albums.

I dont know how anybody can say bad about wilco (the reason i am going for the first time this year)or any of the more independent acts like willy mason or the fiery furnaces. i do admit that the style of most of these bands does not fit with what austin city is famous for, but in music (i.e. cbgb omfug, and alt. country) when definates get screwed its usually quite a catalyst for great things to form.

if yall haven’t seen the black keys be sure and do so. they are awesome they will blow you away. yall need to check them out their label is fat possum. they have 3 cds out . you will not be disappointed.

Got something you want to say?
