Recognizing the Cost of Freedom

For those who have fought for it, freedom has a taste the protected will never know. — Unknown

From the Mudville Gazette:

This is a time set aside to remember those who gave their all for their country. Celebrate that. If you’re fortunate enough to live in the nation that remains the last best hope for freedom then do those things this weekend that bring you joy. Cook out. Travel. Be with friends and family. Eat, drink, and be merry. If you have a moment, a toast to those who’ve made it possible would be fine. You honor their sacrifice by living well.

And that’s what I’ve done this weekend. I’ve tried to honor the sacrafices of my brothers and sisters in arms who have given their all.

On Saturday and Sunday, I played in a charity disc golf tournament that will provide a college fund for a 9 year old boy who lost his father (a fellow Austin-area disc golfer) last year. On Saturday evening, we went to a dear friend’s 65th birthday party. Today, my wife and I will spend the day out at the lake with our dogs.

Today, though, I remember. And I am profoundly thankful for their sacrafices. I stand at attention and salute all of you.

Just got back from a really nice evening with my daughter and family. The kids were playing. My son-in-law was filling up the swimming pool. We had shish-ka-bobs on the grill. Went to the cemetery and the streets were lined with American flags and every veteran had a flag by his grave. We have much to be thankful for and many to be thankful to. God bless America.

Got something you want to say?
