Sen. Dick Durbin Must Resign

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) has compared American interrogators and the US military to Nazis, Soviet gulag operators, and everyone’s favorite genocidal maniac, Pol Pot.

You know what, Moonbats? Enough is enough. It’s time that even the Left stood up and denounced hate-filled rhetoric like this.

If you really don’t understand the differences between gulags and the most pampered prisoners on the planet (yeah, the terrorists at Gitmo)—if you don’t know the difference between a democratically elected US President and history’s worst mass murderers (Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot)—if you don’t understand the difference between forcing someone to listen to loud Christina Aguilera music (coercive interrogation) and cutting their head off (torture)…if you don’t understand these differences, then you are an idiot.

Of course, Durbin is refusing to apologize for his unhinged remarks. But that’s because he doesn’t think he said or did anything wrong:

“Sadly, we have a situation here where some in the right-wing media say I’ve been insulting men and women in uniform,” he [Dick Durbin] said. “Nothing could be farther from the truth.”

You know what Dick? I’m a veteran of the US Army. And I’m insulted by you. And when I talked to my brother this morning (Sergeant First Class, US Army, active duty), he had skipped over being “insulted” and jumped straight to outraged. So you’re wrong. Something could be farther from the truth—and it’s your hate-filled, anti-American, anti-military rhetoric.

Hugh Hewitt hits it square:

BTW: If you don’t “get” this, you are really far removed from the country’s center. It isn’t a Democrat-Republican, left-right thing. It is an American-anti-American thing. Period.

Michelle Malkin is urging you to contact Dick Dubrin’s office and voice your outrage:

Phone: (202) 224-2152 or (312) 353-4952
E-mail: dick@durbin.senate.gov
There is a war on. Durbin has shown us which side he’s on. Show him yours.

(FYI, Michelle has the best round-up from around the blogosphere…go check it out for a link fest of information.)

And while you’re on the phone or typing an email to Durbin, I urge you to call your own Senators, and ask them what their position on Durbin is.

Dave Logan at ThirdWaveDave did just that:

Ted Kennedy 202-224-4543….”Not quite sure, I’ll have to check on that.”
Not quite sure?

Joe Lieberman 202-224-4041….”Mr. Lieberman has no comment at all.”
Really?

John Kerry 202-224-2742….”Sen. Kerry doesn’t have a position on Sen. Durbin’s comments.”
Why doesn’t this surprise me?

This is your United States Senate at work. Proud?

At this point, I don’t want just an apology from Durbin. We should all demand a formal apology followed immediately by his resignation.

  1. A quote by Avi Schlaim, an Israeli historian, on the issue of comparisons to Nazi Germany (referring to Israeli government and military leaders):

“The issue isn’t whether or not we are the same as the Nazis, the issue is that we aren’t different enough.”

  2. Except that Dick Durbin wasn’t comparing the Israeli govenment to Nazi Germany.

He was comparing our country…and more precisely, the men and women of our military…to Nazis.

The truth is that we are different enough from the Nazis, from Stalin, and from the terrorists that we are currently at war with.

I don’t know how a quote from Schlaim, comparing Israeli history to Dick Durbin’s comments are relevant, unless you believe that we’re not all that different.

  3. Specifically, he was comparing a man shivering uncontrollably on the floor from exposure and a man ripping his own hair out from heat exhaustion.

I’m not sure what treating prisoners in this way is attempting to accomplish.

  4. They turned the Air Conditioner up and down on the poor terrorist. Whaaaaa.
Air Conditioning. We’re talking about air conditioning and loud (albeit bad) music.

This is so far removed from ‘torture’. But what they are trying to accomplish with this from of coersive interrogation is to break the guy down enought to get information that will be used to save US lives (military and civilian) and/or the lives of Iraqis.

I don’t know why it’s so hard for the Left to understand that these terrorists (yeah, terrorists…not “Freedom Fighters”, not “Minute Men”, not even “insurgents”) are very bad, evil people.

  6. This whole thing pisses me off to no end. I say let Dick Durbin park em in his friggin back yard and feed em caviar. Durbin is exactly what is wrong with the Democrat party. I just returned from Wisconsin (again) and my died in the wool democrat family ain’t too damn pleased with the likes of Durbin, Reid, Dean, Peloisi, etc. these days. As I have said on more than one occasion, the Democrat party is not the party my dad so proudly endorsed and if they keep this up, there will be no democrat party in a few years other than what is supported by George Soros. And, believe it or not, that doesn’t make me happy. We need a two party system. But, not what we have today.

  7. What is really disgusting is that if you vist Dick’s website, he has a page that talks about how he support our troops. http://durbin.senate.gov/topics2.cfm?code=ts

This man makes me sick, as a wife of a guardsman that has left behind his better paying job and his five kids, I would like to send him to Iraq to live in the conditions that my husband and thousands of other troops endure. The terrorists in gitmo live much better I am sure.

  8. Athena:
You are right…how disgusting. All I can say is thank you for the sacrifice you, your husband and your children have made for me. Please know there are millions of people in this country who are very grateful to you and your family. Please don’t forget that.
