Cases like this make a mockery of justice
Gary Lynn Sterling has been on Texas Death Row since February 9, 1989. That’s almost 16.5 years on borrowed time and wasted taxpayers’ dollars.
Why is Gary Sterling on death row?
Well, on May 13, 1988, he abducted John Wesley Carty (72) and Deloris June Smith (52) from Carty’s home in Navarro County, TX. He then drove them to an isolated area, crushed Carty’s skull in with the bumper jack, and then killed Smith.
Sterling also stole a car, a television, a shotgun and a lantern were stolen from Carty’s house. Because he killed Carty and Smith during the commission of another felony, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to die.
What is the evidence that was used to convict Sterling?
Well, he confessed to the murders of Carty and Smith, and then led authorities to their decaying bodies. While he was in custody, he later admitted involvement in the May 17, 1988 murders of William Manuel Porter, 72 and Leroy Porter, 70, in Hill County.
How the hell is this guy still alive 16 years later?
I wouldn’t give a shit if the jurors all wore Klan hoods during his trial and the judge was sleeping with the DA and the defense lawyers.
When a person admits to brutally and intentionally killing four innocent people—when there is NO DOUBT about the guilt of the condemned…who does not even deny his own guilt—the appeals processes should be brief. And the execution should be carried out within the year.
On August 10, 2005, Gary Lynn Sterling will finally be put to death by the State of Texas. Unfortunately for the victims’ families and for the taxpayers of Texas, it is about 15 years too late.

Don’t you think it would have been too late for the victims’ families even if he had been killed a year after their murders?
