Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in London today. We will not know the death and injury totals from the subway and bus blasts for some time, but they will be considerable.
But, as with all terrorist attacks, an unmeasured casualty is the lost sense of security and safety. And the biggest risk going forward is the loss of resolve of those who have been attacked to stand up to and defeat their attackers, rather than capitulate to them.
My thoughts and solidarity are with the people of London on this day of terrorism.
Here’s what cannot happen in the UK: the British people and its government cannot capitulate to the terrorists. They must up their resolve and commitment to defeating those who would attack and murder them in their homes. If they give in to the terrorists’ demands now, they will forever be at the mercy of terror.
Here’s what cannot but will happen in the US: The Left—to most-likely include Democratic Party leadership—will point their collective finger at President Bush and attempt to somehow blame President Bush and our nation’s War on Terror for the terrorist attacks — look for Ted Rall to draw a cartoon depicting the subway passengers as complicit in their own fate, possibly with President Bush or Tony Blaire standing over them administering the coup de grâce.
So before you start blaming Bush (if it hasn’t already started…never mind, I just checked in with the DU-Lunatics and Koz’s Kids, and they’ve already started)…let’s get one thing straight:
The only person or group with any culpability in these attacks is the terrorists who carried them out. Terrorists commit terrorism. It’s what they do, and they don’t care who is President of the US or how much Michael Moore is rooting for them…they hate all of us and want to kill all of us.
What do these have in common:
- Beirut Bombings
- Iran hostage crisis
- Pan Am Flight 110
- TWA Flight 841
- Achille Lauro
- World Trade Center bombing of 1993
Hint: George W. Bush was not President at the time.

The terrorists sure are clever. What smart people to hurt and kill men, women, and even CHILDREN in the recent London bomb blasts. Now, world citizens will surely say, “Okay, we give up, come control our lives with your ideologies.†Right?
The problem with the leadership at al-Qaeda is that they haven’t figured out that people have no love for killers. Their point of view will only attract the very young and impressionable or the very old and desperate. They miss the largest demographic- law abiding citizens who want peace. If it’s the masses a group wants to affect, do something absolutely worthwhile and positive with the resources. Win hearts.
The world may be talking about al-Qaeda , but it’s not in love with it and the goods it’s selling. Without winning hearts, MommyCool.com notes the change al-Qaeda hopes for will always be shallow.

I don’t have anything substantive to add regarding today’s news from London, other than to express my sympathies for those involved, so instead I’ll provide links to the best the web has to offer on the subject.
