New details of the gruesome attacks on the Groene family were released today. This information comes from the minutes and a recording of a closed-door probable-cause hearing before First District Magistrate Judge Scott Wayman on Tuesday, as Duncan was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping in the bludgeoning deaths of three people in the family home.
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — During six weeks on the run with an 8-year-old girl, convicted sex offender Joseph Edward Duncan told his young prey that he had driven around her neighborhood looking for children, according to court documents released Tuesday.
And when he found Shasta Groene playing in a bathing suit with her 9-year-old brother, Dylan, the documents say, he stalked their home for days, using night-vision goggles to learn its layout before bursting in, subduing their family with a shotgun and a hammer, and abducting the siblings.
Make no doubt about it…Duncan’s preparation for and execution of his crimes are consistent with those of a legally sane person.
“She [Shasta] described how Duncan told her he drove around looking for kids, saw her outside. … He told her he watched her two or three days and at night would peer inside the home. He became aware of the layout of the home. We found night vision goggles in the vehicle.”
Duncan bragged to her about killing her family with a hammer and showed it to her.

It’s hard to remember that our justice system is still the most equal handed and by most accounts, the most moral system in the world. Ergo, we give people like this a voice and place to defend themselves. Hard to think that way when we all ultimately want swift punishment and execution of such people. When there is something so evil in this world, it reinforces our faith in god and what is right.

I found out about this by watching ID. ( tv show) I was crying because it was just sad and horrible what this stupid bastard has done and killed these very kind victims. Slade and Dylan still had many more years to experiance in their lives and i know that it was a nightmare and I could see it myself. I hope all of all of the victims R.I.P. and live a happier life in heaven. I will still pray. =]
I found dylans memorial totally accidentally, then I researched how he died I was stunned and horrified beyond words. An entire family wiped out for the predatory needs of a paedophile.And they never stood a chance, they never knew he was stalking them.. they were all such innocent victims this will live with me always, and shows me no matter how careful you are you can never be careful enough. all my doors and windows will be constantly locked…….always…….
Get a gun and learn how to use it. Guns save lives. The media refuses to report it.

Thank you Tracey =) I personally don’t remember much about them, except for playing with Dylan and Shasta once when I was real little. My dad was pretty distraught about the whole thing. As for Duncan, I don’t really know what’s happening to him. Only God knows and will judge him. He’s a very distrubed man and will get what he deserves, in this life or the next.

here in the uk guns are becoming more prevalant, illegal ones of course! trying to get a gun licence here well you would have better luck getting the crown jewels! we have alot of violent crime and it is on the rise. Our justice system doesnt do victims justice, a while ago someone was sentenced to 7yrs for murder, well take off time already served, and good behaviour they will be out in 3 and half, kinda makes the blood boil rather rapidly. As for joseph duncan what is happening with him now? I hear he was in california awaiting trial for the despicable murder of a little boy? we dont get that news of him here, I do scour the web (in the hope someone has done him in) but I havent found anything recently..
This tragedy is so horrible. I felt distraught when i watched it on ID. I felt like crying. But one thing consoled me and that was the fact that God is still alive and will judge us all one day. I believe they are in heaven now.
