Water would have to rise about 600′ for our house to get a drop in the front door. And we’re not quite in tornado alley, either. The chances of our being displaced from our home due to natural disaster are remote at best.
Nonetheless, we are still prepared for the worst (which could be an extended period of loss of power and/or water).
In the attic of our two-story home, we have 4 cases of sealed MREs, extra clothing, flashlights, flairs, and a first aid kit. We keep approx. 20 gallons of drinking water in the garage. Also in the garage are a canoe and a kayak, 25 gallons of gasoline, and a small Honda generator that will run the refrigerator in the garage. There is nearly a cord of wood chopped and ready to be burned in the fireplace. We could also use the propane grill to cook.
Counting the MREs, the food in the freezer and refrigerator, and the pantry full of canned goods, I estimate that we have enough food on hand to feed me and my wife for at least a month if we were unable to leave the house and resupply.
And just in case, we have a 12 gauge pump shotgun and a .306 rifle, with plenty of ammunition for both. Looters would be shot dead.
All of this prepardness was pre-Katrina. Since the tragedy in New Orleans, I’m going to add another 20 gallons of water to our stock, a spare tank of propane, and a large bag of dog food, too. Also, I’ll add 2-3 gallons of water into the freezer (will help food from thawing sooner, and will be drinkable once melted).
Are you prepared? Just in case…

A tornado is not going to wipe out an entire large city…earthquake..well that’s a different story and hurricane..well now we all have seen what that’s like. What I’m really concerned about any where in USA is WMD. I’m stocking up (need to find MRE somewhere) but what else do you need in that case in addition to what you have already listed other than a prayer?
