Cold Fury is handing out Fuck You Awards (FYA). I have a few myself:

First of all, to the Left for using a natural disaster as political fodder. And even worse, to use it as a reason not to help a person in dire need:

I was on my home and was on the ramp getting off the highway. I saw a mini-van on the side of the road. There was a lady standing next to the van and in her arms she held her child. I can only assume her mini-van had broken down. I don’t know, perhaps with so many gad stations being out of gas, she had also run out. I slowed down and started to pull over to offer her a ride. At the very last second I noticed a “W” sticker on the back of her vehicle and I sped up and drove off.

Jesse Jackson for playing the race card in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. This goes for anybody else playing the race card, too. Especially Kayne West.

Sean Penn should get a FYA for bringing his entourage and a personal photographer to New Orleans while he helped resuce Katrina vicitms in his small boat.

But the ends outweigh the politics…he did help rescue some people, and was generous enough to give them cash as he delivered them to dry ground.

Sean, next time though, leave the personal photographer at home. Gestures of good will and charity should be done in anonymity. Turning it into a photo-op cheapens the act, and the space on your boat allocated to the photog and your entourage could have been used to rescue a few extra people.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin might deserve the biggest FYA of the week. For all the finger pointing that he is doing, he’s ignoring the obvious…the first 2-3 days of a natural disaster should be handled by the local agencies before national agencies can mobilize and begin helping. Nagin failed his city miserably. And now he’s looking for someone else to blame:

  • Mayor Nagin ordered the refugees to the Superdome and Convention Center without adequate security and no provisions for food, water and sanitary conditions.
  • Mayor Nagin failed in his responsibility to provide public safety and to manage the orderly evacuation of the citizens of New Orleans.
  • The federal government does not have the authority to intervene in a state emergency without the request of a governor. President Bush declared an emergency prior to Katrina hitting New Orleans.
  • Governor Blanco failed to send a timely request for specific aid.
  • The federal government’s role is to offer aid upon request.

Celeb Assistance

It’s almost painful to watch. Finally, some celebrities step up to the plate and pledge to help out with the relief efforts, but it couldn’t be any more about them. Sean Penn took out a small boat to “assist”, but this article has a classic line:

Got something you want to say?
