Today’s issue of The Daily Texan has a story about how the University of Texas system is helping displaced college students from the New Orleans area.

Many students, especially Texas natives, who had planned to go to school at Tulane, Loyola or Xavier universities, have now been absorbed into the UT System, which loosened its enrollment requirements to accommodate the evacuees.
Ryan Samuels (Tulane).

According to he UT Web site, these “special admission” undergraduates will be charged a $700 flat-rate cost for the semester. That’s a helluva nice deal.

But, at least one these students is an idiot:

Ryan Samuels from Houston was enrolled to be a Freshman at Tulane. Samuels is instead enrolled at the University of Texas this semester—not surprisingly, as a liberal arts major.

In a story by by Delaney Hall, Samuels talks about the violence in New Orleans:

“The looting I understand,” said Samuels, “for food and maybe even the occasional flat-screen. But I don’t understand the killing. A lot of it is misdirected anger. I guess if I had to wait as long as some of those people did, I’d be mad, too.”

What? You understand people taking the “occassional flat-screen”? Are you fucking kidding me? Please, tell me how the hell you can justify stealing not-essential-to-survival items during a catastrophe. I’m waiting. If you really don’t know and understand the difference between taking a case of water from a supermarket during the hurricane, and the lawless looting of liquor or appliance stores—then you are a moron and the University of Texas should double-check your SAT scores before allowing you to start classes.

Oh, and as far as the killings, shootings, and other violence is concerned, Ryan—”a lot it” is NOT misdirected anger. The people who are shooting at rescure workers and police officers, as well as the looters, and rapists—they were criminials before the hurricane. They’re just using the hurricane to terrorize on a larger scale than they were doing prior to the hurricane.

Quit making excuses for criminals, Ryan.

One Response to “Understanding the Looters”

Maybe Ryan would feel differently if the looters broke into his home and took his television? People also have a bizarre idea of what it is to be poor in the US. I know very few people on welfare who do not have one or more television. But, of course, I’ve never personally seen one with a large flat screen, so I guess it’s okay to loot.

Got something you want to say?
