Looking for something to write about today, I flipped through the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine (Issue 982, Sept 8, 2005).
I’ve taken Rolling Stone to task numerous times for their editorial style, in which they glamorize the drug culture, encourage kids to drop out of school, and unabashedly bash the men and women of our military.
This issue was more of the same:
- Diddy Loses the “P” — on page 38 we learn that Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has decided that he will now be known simply as “Diddy”. “I felt like the P was getting between me and the fans,” Piddy said.
Actually, Diddy, I’ve always thought it was your music and lack of talent that was coming between you and having fans.
- Q & A with Tommy Lee — on page 52, Rolling Stone reminds its young readers that reckless drug use is fun and admirable:
Q: Have you ever done a huge rail of coke off your snare drum?
A: Not off the snare, but I used to fill up a beer cap to the brim [with coke] and smash the fucker into my nose…Very nice, Rolling Stone. And why exactly did you need to randomly ask that question in the middle of an otherwise boring interview? Oh, that’s right, because doing drugs is cool.
- Bush vs. the Mother — on page 68, Rolling Stone has a National Affair story about Cindy Sheehan, with the following lede: On the president’s doorstep — a dead soldier, and aggrieved housewife and the start of something big
Sigh. First of all, Rolling Stone, President Bush is not “against” Cindy Sheehan. She is against him. The title of the story implies otherwise. But don’t let a little dishonesty stand in the way of a good story-telling.
Second, how disspointed are you that in the time between writing that Cindy is the “start of something big” and the publishing of the story, that Cindy would already be all but forgotten once the MSM discovered numerous other dead bodies they could try to blame President Bush for?

[...] Robbie at Urbangrounds has some issues with Rolling Stone Magazine and their editorial policy. How a great mag went south. Pity. [...]
