I got to thinking about Joe Biden’s act during the confirmation hearings of the soon-to-be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and how it would play in the real world.

I tried to imagine Joe Biden sitting next to a bunch of regular guys having a couple of cold Budweisers after work at the local neighborhood bar or tavern. And I’m trying to imagine Biden speaking to or treating them the way he has to Judge John Roberts.

If Joe Biden was sitting next to me in a bar, and if he spoke to me in the manner that he spoke to Judge Roberts, I would give him exactly one chance to buy me a beer, shut his pie hole, and move at least 3 bar stools away from me. But if he opened his mouth one more time, or tried to dismiss me with a flip of his hand, I’d drag him outside and punch him in the mouth.

Patrick Kelley at The Pagan Temple, speaking about Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy, has similar thoughts:

It is easy to see why Roberts is so impressive to so many people as to his nature, his intelligence, his capacity for thoughtfulness, and his judicial temperament. It would take a hell of a lot of patience to keep me from pouncing on this crew.

I don’t have that kind of patience or tolerance for disrespect.

In the world I live in, you don’t condescend to a man, you don’t belittle him, and you don’t treat him with blatant disrespect. Especially not to his face. But if you do, then you had better be prepared to fight him or be able to back him down.

Somehow, I don’t think Senator Biden would fare too well in a bar fight. Probably about as well as he would fare in another bid at the Presidency, I suppose.
