The season’s first BCS Bowl Rankings (which determine which schools go to which bowl games) was released this afternoon.

There are currently 7 undefeated Division I-A teams left in the Nation. Five of those schools comprise the first 5 spots in the BCS: 1) USC 2) Texas 3) Virginia Tech 4) Georgia, and 5) Alabama. One of these top 5 has to lose sometime this season (Georgia and Alabama would have to meet in the SEC Championship game if they were both undefeated at that time).

Texas Tech, which plays Texas this weekend in Austin, is #6 behind 1-loss LSU. The only other unbeaten team, UCLA, is ranked #9, after the 1-loss Miami Hurricanes.

It is very likely, if all goes as expected, that the regular season will end with 4 undefeated teams: USC, Texas, Virginia Tech, and the winner of the SEC Championship game. And this is why the BCS needs to be scrapped and a playoff system put in its place.

Oh, and after watching how easy it was for Notre Dame’s QB Brady Quinn to move the ball against the mediocre USC defense, Vince Young will have a career day against them. Unfortunately for USC, the Longhorns defense is much better than Notre Dame’s, too. At this point, I’d rather play USC in the Rose Bowl than Virginia Tech, whose team reminds me a lot of the Longhorns.
