Another anti-war, anti-military “war” movie from Hollywood

I’m not going to go see this propaganda trash. I was on the “live set” back in ‘91, and my experiences were quite different than those of the sorry-excuse-for-a-Marine Anthony Swofford.

By all accounts, it’s just another Hollywood “the-military-ruined-my-life” movie. Anti-war, and anti-military — would you expect anything more from Hollywood, who believes that these poor young men were “duped” into joining the military? No. Of course you wouldn’t.

All of the Marines and Soldiers I know that I have spoken with don’t plan on seeing it either. Nor does BlackFive and the Marines that he knows:

I don’t plan on seeing it. So, for those of you that are sending me emails about it, I probably won’t have anything to add to the discussion other than most Marines I know think it’s BS.

My wife thinks Jake Gyllenhaal is a “cutie”. I told her if I saw him on the street and his head was on fire — I’d piss on his leg.

UPDATE: Back in July I asked, “Why does the military stuff coming out of Hollywood suck?” To which Glenn Reynolds provided the answer:

PERHAPS IF HOLLYWOOD HAD MORE PEOPLE who had been in the military, it would be able to make military stuff that doesn’t suck.

Indeed.

I would read the review of the same directors other movie “American Beauty” over at VNN. It is how we live in a prison called “American Freedom” glorified by the likes of the director Mendes. The perfect slave thinks he’s free. This movie is propaganda for America. And America is the suck.

America is individualism, profit, getting yours and hording it all to yourself, and as far as American religion is concerned, hording it from your family as well, but giving plenty to the church and Israel, and I don’t see how going overseas to fight one of Israel’s enemies protects yours at home, that is why no politician is sending his child over there. The politician understands America, there is no obligation in a land of indivdualism and “getting yours” to fight collectively for anything.

This nation is long post-great, I don’t think the white guys in WWII faught and died so that Mexicans and Third World immigrants would take over and our own politicians would bow to their every need to quickly inflate their wallets. It is individualism, worry about getting and securing yours, not fighting and dying for someone elses financial security.

Why am I not surprised that you’re from Wallingford, PA, AmericaIsTheSuck?

I wish you wouldn’t jump to bias conclusions without having seen the movie firsthand.

You’re making points that are simply not true. Number 1, this movie is downright non-political. It’s about a group of Marines trying to get through the boredom of six months in the Saudi desert. They are Marines, and they want combat action, but they’re not going to get it.

Number 2, the book was written by a Marine, and the screenplay was written by another Marine. Strangely, not two people who have never been in the military.

If you read the book, maybe you might have a beef or two against the author, but most of those shortcomings aren’t in the movie. You guys are just plain old missing out. The movie is extremely funny and I’ll be recommending it to everyone.

When I left the theater, all I could think about was how much I missed the comraderie of the Marines. Most of Jarhead is exactly how life in the Marines was and those are the things so much of us miss.
