At work last week, we were discussing our life lists — the things we most want to do and see in our lifetimes. I compiled my Life List in March of 2004, and had it posted to my old online journal. I thought I’d share it here too.

These are the 50 things I most want to do, see, experience, or achieve during my lifetime. As of today, I have completed 13 of them.

VISIT

  • North and South Poles
  • Great Wall of China
  • Panama Canal
  • The Galapagos Islands
  • The Taj Mahal
  • * Machu Picchu (with my wife-to-be Shannon in 2000)
  • Little Diomede
  • All 7 continents (3 of 7 so far, excluding the 4 A’s)
  • All 50 states (all but Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, Maine, and Hawaii so far)
  • * The Grand Canyon (1977)
  • Victoria Falls
  • * An active volcano (2001, got to watch the Arenal Volcano erupt as we drank cold Imperial beer from across Lake Arenal.)
  • Havana, Cuba
  • Crater Lake, Oregon
  • Red Square, Moscow

SWIM IN

  • Lake Victoria
  • * Lake Superior (1988)
  • Lake Titicaca
  • Lake Nicaragua (we made it to within 5 miles of the lake before we were told that we couldn’t continue on with our Costa Rican rental car)
  • The Caspian Sea
  • * Pacific Ocean (1979)
  • * Atlantic Ocean (1995)

EXPLORE UNDERWATER

  • Coral reefs of Florida
  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Fiji Islands
  • * The Bahamas (1999)

ACCOMPLISH

  • Land on and take of from an aircraft carrier
  • Parachute/sky dive
  • Teach a college course
  • Write a book
  • * Ship aboard a freighter as a Merchant Marine (1995)
  • * Serve in the US Army (as a 91B, Combat Medic from 1990-1993)
  • * Graduate from college (BS in Professional Writing in 1998)
  • Canoe the Mississippi River from source to mouth
  • Ride my bike across Texas (El Paso to Orange)
  • * Complete the 262-mile Texas Water Safari canoe race in under 100 hours (78:15 with my brother Marty in a Standard Class We No Nah Jensen 18′ canoe in 2003)
  • Complete the Texas Water Safari solo.
  • Own a 1963 Corvette
  • * Take a cross-country train trip (1990, Minneapolis to New Orleans to Houston)
  • Photograph a grizzly bear in the wild
  • Sea kayak Prince Williams Sound, Alaska
  • * Shake hands with a US President (current or former) — President Bill Clinton (Feb 27, 2008 at a speech on the UT campus)
  • Hand-build a wood strip canoe

EVENTS

  • * See Willie Nelson perform live (2004, at The Backyard in Austin)
  • Go to the Kentucky Derby
  • Go to the Indy 500
  • Go to the Daytona 500
  • Go to a World Series game
  • Go to the Super Bowl
  • Watch the Running of the Bulls (I used to want to run with the bulls, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown content to just watch)
