I don’t believe these women have the same motivation as male child rapists. These women see themselves as Barbie Dolls who have an insatiable need to be worshipped in a way no adult can or will or should. They choose teaching as a profession for the same twisted reason but then find that the normal adoration of little kids for their teachers isn’t enough. A sentence of community service for Lafave plays exactly into her delusions. I can’t believe the judge/lawyers/psychiatrists couldn’t see that. If I was her judge, I’d order her head shaved, restrict all make-up, dress in her bag lady clothes and then sentence her to cleaning up blood and guts in a chicken slaughter house.

Just kidding with the other post but one must agree, given a reversal of gender roles in this particular case, I am quite certain that a man would not be in jail but as my Grandfather so aptly put it, “he’d be under the jail.” The screams of parents and lawmakers would crack the planet…then again, perhaps Michael Jackson is just too pretty to go to prison.

But that’s really not what’s at issue here…nobody’s claiming that the boy did anything wrong.

There’s a reason why we have “age of consent” laws — how young is “too” young for the child to be able to give consent before it’s not alright?

What if instead of the teacher being hot-bodied Debra LaFave, it’s a 27-year old male gym coach? Or a priest from a Catholic School?

Or, what if the victim is 10-years old instead of 16?

We all have a very short memory, I guess. Our grandparents (depending on your age) were married at 13 and 14 years old. Why? Because everything is in place at that age. These are not children, and the label paedophile therefore is not appropriate. No one should be punished for being attracted to a young adult.

As far as my research has gone, the age of consent is 16 statewide. In Florida, however, in the early 1990’s, the age was dropped to 15. That may have been changed back since then, I don’t know. In the late 1970’s, I think 18 was the age.
We do need a consent age, but it should be 14, with no parent intervention. But this poses other problems, like who will raise the babies… the parents, or the 14 year olds, or the hot 24 year old teacher…?

Some of you up here have got to be kidding me. Whether or not the boy, he is a boy afterall, consented is utter inconsequential. Some of you claim that it is every boy’s fantasy to want to bang the hot young teacher. The last I knew it was the fantasy of many girls as well. However, that doesn’t change a damned thing. For you to say that a boy is somehow more responsible for making a decision in such a matter is to say one of either two things. The first is that a 14 year old boy is more mature than a 14 year old girl. This is, in fact, false. The opposite is actually true. The second is that a 14 year old boy is more intelligent than a 14 year old girl. In either case, you are either an idiot or, well, an idiot. As another put it, this is why we have age-of-consent laws.

Furthermore, the legal decision arrived at in this case is further discouragement to men to come forward after having been raped or have been sexually abused by, women… which happens more often then you’d think. Frankly, I am disturbed that so many of you fail to see the underlying issue. Women are treated differently by the legal system than men and attractive women are treated most differently of all. It is a fact that women, of equivalent criminal history to their male counterparts, routinely get 1/3 less prison time than said male counterparts for the same crimes. Debbie Lafave, who raped, yes, she raped a boy by Florida state law, has, in fact, recieved no prison time. A male teacher who had sex with a 15 year old girl in the same state under similar circumstances just recieved a five year sentence. Personally, I don’t see the difference. If you are not appalled by this legal discrepancy you are probably, well, an idiot at best or immoral at worst.

What this decision amounts to is the implicit claim that somehow men are more sexually responsible/culpable than women. There is no basis for this attitude. There is no basis at all. It’s the same kind of twisted and tortured reasoning that compells some men to beat up the men their girlfriends are cheating with. It doesn’t make any sense.

In this battle, reason has lost yet again to sophistry and the ill-founded and asinine views of, what unfortuneately, counts as the majority.

Amazing, how society as a whole is so pre-occupied with sex. So much so that its a fantasy for most, not a crime, when a young persons youth is taken. Ok its alright if it happens to a male, but if it had been a 25 year old male who RAPED a young girl. Yes turns to RAPED if the roles are reversed sexually. It seems like you’ve lived a very sheltered life considering how one-sided your point of view is. Well, everyone is entitled to their point of view, but let me just say this to you. Before 1991, the statutory age of consent in Holland was 21 years old. Yep! As in, a beautiful blond like Debra LaFave could have gotten into trouble for sneaking into a frat party full of college freshmen and sophomores back in 1989 in that country. Very much like the United States, Holland was getting to become a playground for prosecutorial abuse and overzealous policing, so they reformed their laws to give adolescents 12 to 15 years old veto power in statutory rape cases and 16 to 20 year olds status as consenting adults. While you may wish to continue to criticize Holland for making this liberal 90 degree turn, you need to look just how overboard the United States has gone with its child advocacy movement and its age of consent laws. Now there is a Federal law on the books in which someone over 18 years old can be charged with statutory rape if they go to a foreign country and have sexual relations with someone under 18 years of age no matter what the actual age of consent is in that country. Do you honestly believe that an 18-year old college boy on vacation over in France (where the age of consent is 15) who meets a 15-year old girl at a party is going to pick the phone up and call the U.S. embassy in Paris to ask for authorities to be waiting for him with handcuffs after he has slept with that girl? I don’t think so. Yet another incident that shows our country’s age of consent laws dive into the absurd was a case of a woman in her 30’s out in Utah who was 13 years old when she married her significantly older husband Tom Green. (She was 13 and he was 37 when they got married). The marriage was not properly executed and because a violation of the age of consent laws in Utah carries no statute-of-limitations in certain instances, this man was sent to prison. Sure, I know the man was a polygamist and I’ve never been crazy about polygamy. But this woman was in her thirties, had been married to this man for quite a while, and had kids with him. What’s next? Are we going to allow for police to indict a 107-year old man for having had sex with his 87-year old wife one day before they were married because she was in her early or mid teens the first time they ever made love? The old man probably wouldn’t live long enough to serve out whatever sentence a judge could hand down to him. I lost what little respect I ever had for child advocacy organizations after I heard that story, and I don’t even allow my mother to donate money to any of these organizations, because they are little gestapos looking to make this country a Fascist totalitarian police state. Also, another valid point I would like to set forth. Oprah Winfrey shoots her mouth off on how a responsible adult needs to say “no” if a 14-year old throws themselves naked in that person’s face. However, if some 14 or 15-year old boy were to slip Oprah Winfrey a mickey finn (that famous rape drink from the 1970s) and the boys had the audacity to charge her with statutory rape, she might hold a much different point of view. That actually happened to a 46-year old schoolteacher out in California when I was living out there in the 1990s. There’s always two sides to every issue, Greg. Even the most sensitive and controversial ones. I don’t disagree with anybody who believes that Debra LaFave was in the wrong profession (the teaching profession) if she went having sex with one of her students, but there is no way anybody in their right mind even begin to compare her to someone as creepy and repulsive as Joseph Duncan III (who raped an 8-year old girl and brutally raped and killed her 9-year old brother out West).

Re: Debra Lafave. If the 14yr old is a normal boy, societies double standard will allow him to mature just fine. I hope he’s not adversely effected in any way. Obviously, there is something seriously wrong with Debra. I feel sorry for her, and especially her immediate family and ex-husband. What a blow this must be. Debra’s sentence was fair because this was her only known case, and the boys parents wanted to just end it without a trial. She got lucky. Secondly, per CBS interview, it didn’t appear she had malicious or criminal intent. It will be interesting if we see Debra now blossom into another Anna Nicole Smith, with attention and money opportunities. Guess if that happens, everyone will know the real Debra Lafave. Pretty sad.

Leave this poor girl alone. I am sure she had no idea all of this would come about and probably considered it no more than cheating on her spouse. I don’t agree with cheating but this is carrying things to the other extreme. It is different when a male rapes a female. A male has the ability to have sex with a female when the female does not want it. That can not be said in this case. If the alleged offenses occured in the classroom and at this girl’s house, it is hard to argue that the 14 year old was forced. And if the 14 year old was doing something he did not want to do, there is no amount of viagra that could be slipped into his drink that would allow her to have her way with him. When I was this boy’s age, looking at Playboy and Penthouse was our dream. This teacher was a trophy as far as this boy is concerned. But this girl, no matter how “technically illegal” this was, does not deserve the same punishment as a commonly defined pedefile.
