You can go to hell

From Protein Wisdom the headlines coming out of Iraq today:

Upwards of 15 million vote in Iraq; violence minimal; polls stay open an hour late to accomodate high turnout; in several Sunni areas, ballots run out

There are many on Left who do not believe that there is anything worth fighting for. They should ask the 15 million Iraqis if today was worth fighting (or dying) for. They should ask the hundreds of thousands of US Soldiers who have volunteered to make today possible if they believe it was worth fighting for.

The overwhelming answer will be Yes.

In the powerful words of Iraqi Citizen and voter Betty Dawisha:

Anybody who doesn’t appreciate what America has done and President Bush, let them go to hell.

I think you may misunderstand the critique of some of those who opposed the war.

Sure, everyone supports democracy in Iraq, but this is a process not the end. It was exciting to see Iraqis voting but there is anticipation to see exactly who they were voting for. That’s the important part if you ask me.

There were, of course, elections going on in South Vietnam as we were losing the war there so the impact of these elections will have to be judged at a later date.

Sure, everyone supports democracy in Iraq, but this is a process not the end.

Let’s dissect this seemingly innocuous compound statement:

1) You state as fact that everyone supports democracy in Iraq. That is simply not true. There are numerous Senators and Rep. in the Liberal party who do not truly support democracy in Iraq. It’s like the left claiming that they “support” the troops — when every actual troop, almost to a man, will tell you that they don’t believe you.

2) On this point, you are absolutely correct. The democratization of Iraq after decades of a barbaric dictator is a process…one that is not yet complete. But one that is exceptionally worthy of fighting for and seeing through. Which is why John Murtha’s “Cut and Run” plan of surrender in Iraq is cowardly and wrong.

every actual troop, almost to a man, will tell you that they don’t believe you.

And yet virtually all of the Iraq war veterans coming home to run for Congress are Democrats.

On the bigger point, I believe most of the Democratic delegation is firmly on the record for supporting democracy around the world. It is disingenuous to claim that opposition to your plan to ’spread democracy’ is opposition to the goal.

US support for democracy in Venezuela, for instance, reveals our fluctuating levels of support for that goal.

Got something you want to say?
