There was a time when Time magazine was considered a reputable and legitimate news magazine. But, with their 2005 Person of the Year issue, Time has become more like People or Rolling Stones magazines — little more than cultural variety.
Bill Gates was demonized when he was making gazillions of dollars. But now that he’s giving some of it away — he’s a “person” of the year? According to Time magazine, marrying well is now a feat worthy of being called “person of the year”.
And Bono? Sure, he should be commended for his passion for social issues. But throwing some rock concerts while helping your friends sell more records doesn’t exactly put you in my pantheon of “great people”.
Time’s blinders and global unawareness are staggering.
- Michelle Malkin wonders how Time could overlook the Purple, Cedar, and Orange Revolutions.
- My personal choice for person of the year would have once again been the American Soldier.
- The single biggest story of the year was nature. The Asian tsunami was the single largest event in the world this year. And the world, especially average Americans, dug deep into their wallets and hearts to help. And when we were nailed on our own shores by Katrina and Rita, we dug even deeper. The weather, and those who helped out how and when they could, are all bigger and better candidates for people of the year than a Gazillionaire and his wife who gave back .00001% of their wealth.

Yeah, I have to agreethey’re way off this year.
Was There No One Better?
Apparently I’m not alone in thinking that Time’s choices were, ummm, lame. So did a lot of folks. This happens every year, but if you’re going to honor generosity, how about the millions of people who donated billions of dollars to help with the rel…
Give Bill Gates a break. I dont see anyone else donating $700 million. Checking the Forbe’s 400 richest american’s list, there are quit a few people that have the ability to donate that kind of money, but they dont. Give Bill the credit he is due.
I would think that Bono was chosen for the work he is doing in Afrika. Once again, I do not see anyone else do the work that he is doing. I dont see Madonna going to Afrika to fight for more money to cure Aids. Obviousely you did not do your hw when deciding to bash Bill and Bono.
[...] TIME magazine just named their Person of the Year (persons as it turned out). But there were a lot of not-so-great people in 2005. So, here’s my list of the Top 5 Worst People of 2005: [...]
Some people just want to complain because they are bored wrapping holiday presents. The common theme btwn Bono and Gates is that they have celebrity and ample finances …and here’s a shocker…they are actually putting it to good use.
Its is upto TIME magazine to honor anyone they deem worthy in any sense of the word and not just the narrow-minded definition you seem to possess.
Nobody seemed to be outrages when CNN sent out as breaking news that Britney Spears was having a baby. I was embarrassed to receive that as breaking news in my inbox.
It is true that many catastrophic events happened in the world this year, but instead of focusing on the gloom and destruction, isn’t it refreshing to see the media covering something inspirational?
U2 has raised awareness about the issues facing the African continent, and now world leaders are getting involved providing support on a level that only a leader of the free-world could.
I don’t see any other celebrity using their public voice for good?
So before you are quick to criticize TIME’s choice for people of the year perhaps you should try analyzing your own life and see what in it prevents you from being on the cover…
