There’s an article on Yahoo about the Patriot Guard riders countering the anti-gay protest held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at a military funeral in Ft. Campbell, KY.
I wrote about the Patriot Guard back in December and have since joined the organization, although I have not had the opportunity to ride with the group yet.
It’s important to note that the Patriot Guard riders do not only attend funerals to counter the protestors, nor do they only attend funerals where there are protests planned (whether by Phelps’ group or others). The primary mission of the Patriot Guard riders is to:
Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Countering protestors is not required for us to fulfill this part of our mission.

I did get a laugh from this “imagined” scenario from Tarek at The Liquid List:
Bikers! Who could have imagined. The nice thing about it, if you let your mind run wild with the prospect, is that some of Phelp’s unruly bunch of homophobes could take a swing at just one biker and, since imaginary bikers are in this scenario both bloodthirsty for justice and supremely skilled at hand to hand combat, Phelp’s entire traveling entourage of psychos could be wiped off the earth once and for all. What? I can dream.
Heh. Oh, by the way, our supreme hand-to-hand combat skills? Not so imaginery…/wink.

Uh, didn’t you go mano-a-mano with a doe a couple of months ago?
