Juniors and the Texas Death Penalty
The Feb 8, 2006 execution of Robert James Neville Jr. followed the Jan 31, 2006 execution of Jamie Elizalde Jr.. Neville’s execution marked the fifth time in Texas that two Juniors (Jr) have been executed consecutively.
The next scheduled execution — of Clyde Smith Jr. on Feb 15, 2006 — will mark the first time that Jr’s have been executed thrice consecutively in Texas.
The previous consecutive pairs:
- Sammie Felder, Jr. (Dec. 15 1999) and Earl Heiselbetz, Jr. (Jan 12, 2000).
- Genaro Camacho, Jr. (Aug 26, 1998) and Delbert Teague, Jr. (Sep 9, 1998).
- Joe Gonzales, Jr. (Sep 18 1996) and Richard Brimage, Jr. (Feb 10, 1997)
- Jesus Romero, Jr. (May 20, 1992) and Robert Black Jr. (May 22, 1992)

Other Jr. Facts —
- In 1976, the Gregg v. Georgia ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty. The first execution in Texas after this ruling was also a Jr. — Charlie Brooks Jr (Dec 7, 1982), who also became the first U.S. prisoner to be executed by lethal injection.
- In the Gregg v. Georgia decision, Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. dissented, while Justice Lewis Franklin Powell, Jr. concurred with the decision.

That’s pretty wild – kind of makes it look like Texas parents who name their kids after themselves run the risk of raising psychopaths.
I wonder if the same effect occurs if they just change the middle name . . .
I suspect that most of these death row inmates fathers didn’t stick around very long after they impregnated the mothers.
I’m more curious how many had fathers or other family members who were murders. Saw some documentary about a serial killer in I think Kansas whose father, mother, and brother had also been murderers. Worse, this guy murdered his wife, served his time, was released only to murder approx. 6 women.
I was thinking more like when a George H W has a kid he calls George W. Seems like it probably would lead to some sort of criminal conduct . . .
Bush Derangement Syndrome in full affect. I don’t know how you haven’t already moved to Canada…oh, wait…they just elected a Conservative govn’t too, didn’t they?
Right Humor Deficit in full affect (sic).
Why would I move to Canada? I’m a patriot, and I intend to stay right here and fight for our Constitution.
Since when is making asinine comments “fight[ing] for our Constitution”?
Robbie, I love ya, but I don’t like this post. That’s your right..I just don’t like it. Death is not trivial.
Well said, Dianne.
Repeated posts on death row inmates has always seemed suspect to me but I attributed it to a passion for justice. Posts like this veer more to the territory of simple bloodlust.
Oh, bull. I lose no sleep over the execution or mocking of sadistic murderers.
