On March 3, 2006, the United States Department of Defense posted the following:

Pfc. Tina M. Priest, 20, of Austin, Texas, died in Taji, Iraq on March 1, from non-combat related injury. Priest was assigned to the 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Divison, Fort Hood, Texas.

On Thursday, 09 Mar 06, I will be joining numerous other Patriot Guard Riders from all over Texas and neighboring states to ride in honor and rememberance of this fallen hero. I’m grateful to my company for allowing me the time off from work to take part in this mission to help bring a fallen Soldier to her final resting place.

The Patriot Guard Riders full itinerary for the funeral in Smithville, TX.

The objectives of each Patriot Guard mission are:

  1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
  2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

I don’t know whether any protestors will be at this funeral. I sincerely hope that there are not. Because I’d much rather focus on the first objective.

The Patriot Guard Riders received the following email from PFC Priest’s family:

I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone that will be at Pfc. Tina M. Priest’s funeral. Tina is our niece and it means so much to us that she will be honored.

Tina was a beautiful, vibrant young woman that touched the hearts of many. She was
dedicated to defending her country and took pride in being an American Soldier.

Thanks for all you do. May those who are coming to Smithville on Thursday, have a
safe trip.

Sincerely,
Leah Wolf

  4. It’s appalling that protesters would protest at a funeral. Have you seen such a thing?

My condolences to Ms. Priest’s family. It’s a terrible loss for all of us.

    May she rest in peace.

I don’t like motorcycles at all, the noise, the danger, the risk, the damage, but I respect that you guys are trying to do. Yours is an admirable effort.

  5. My last sentence should read, “…I respect WHAT you guys are trying to do…..”.

    I really do.

  6. Thanks, Hope. I just got home from the funeral — it was extremely moving and I think we made a huge impact on the family and the community of Smithville. I’ll write more in a separate post.

  7. I think the Patriot Guard Riders are flat out greatness! I applaud you and only wish I could be there!

  8. Oh my. This is what you meant. It’s so hard to understand why people do things like this to each other.

  9. That’s horrible. They aren’t protesters. They are some sort of instigaters of hatred. How horrible.

I couldn’t comprehend what you meant about protesters at funerals. They aren’t what I think of as protesters and they aren’t what I think of as Christians. They are even doing their hatred and cruelty in the name of God and Baptists.

What in the world can they be hoping to accomplish.

Thank you for protecting the grieving.

I think you are almost as hateful as those Phelps people in your attitude towards some people…but the Patriot Guards are really trying to do a good and noble thing and you do a good thing by helping them.

    Disgusting.

  10. Strangely enough, the above url works, but I made it into a Tiny URL, which I should have done in the first place.

The Phelps family can protest all they want as far as I’m concerned, but a funeral isn’t the place for it.

We have laws for everything…even spitting on the sidewalk. We have way more laws than we need but, surely, there must be something about disrupting a funeral or funerals on a regular basis that is applicable, to have the Phelps people removed from the areas of these funerals.

    Keep it up, Patriot Guards.

Robbie, I don’t allign myself with many of your positions on matters, but protecting the grieving from the cruel antics of the Phelps is important.

  11. Today marks the 2 year anniversary of the death of Tina Priest.

I have not forgotten. I will be eternally grateful for the sacrifice she made so that I might live free.
