Do you have a favorite artist that you don’t think anybody else knows about? Somebody so amazingly talented, that you can’t believe that they are not a common household name?

Dar WilliamsFor me, one of those artists is Dar Williams.

The Wikipedia entry on Dar starts:

Dar Williams born April 19, 1967* is an American singer-songwriter specializing in what can best be described as “folk-pop”.

After what I call Texas-hillcountry-music (a blend of folk, country, blues, and roots rock — think Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely, Kelly Willis, Bruce and Charlie Robison, etc.), folk-pop is probably my next favorite genre of music, and Dar Williams one of my favorite in that category.

Dar — a Massachusetts native — has released 5 albums, including her debut album Honesty Room (1995), and her most recent release My Better Self (2005).

Listen to Dar’s cover of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb (with Ani DiFranco) here. Or check out more Dar Williams on ITunes (especially another duet: Closer to You, with Béla Fleck)

If you live in central Texas, Dar will be performing at the Cactus Cafe in Austin on June 6.

*Happy birthday to Dar — who is one year older than I am.

Hey Robbie, just stumbled across your site and I enjoy it immensely. And I even agree with you most of the time. I’ll be sure to check out Dar – she sounds like someone I would like. I thought I would drop you another name that I think fits your so aptly worded description – “Somebody so amazingly talented, that you can’t believe that they are not a common household name.” And he is also a central Texan. Maybe you’ve seen or heard him. His name is Ruben V. Singer, songwriter, and man can he shred a guitar. I’d say he fits your description for Texas Hillcountry Music. Check him out at Rubenv.com, or better yet, catch him live in San Antonio where he can usually be found playing at least 3 nights a week. I promise you won’t regret it.

good call on this one, Robbie. I sampled some of her material in filesharing, and I will be looking for her CDs now.

Got something you want to say?
