Liberal on Hippie Violence

No reported injuries in flash pillow fight

Yesterday, I read in the Austinist that a “flash-mob” pillow fight (being dubbed as a “Pillow Fight Club”) was planned for Thursday evening on the shores of Town Lake at Auditorium Shores park.

I had several initial reactions:

  1. How stupid. If anybody over the age of 23 shows up for this, they are complete idiots.
  2. That there would not be a single Young Republican, conservative, or otherwise gainfully employeed (non-student) standing around a park with a pillow waiting to have a grade-school-like pillow fight.
  3. The Daily Kos would hate this, as it would be a terrifying reminder of the daily school-yard beatings he took as a high school student in Berkley (it’s so hard to type “took a beating at a high in Berkley” with a straight face).

Well, it looks like about 200 kids did show up to pummel each other with feathers and polyester.

The Austin American-Statesman was on hand and has a three minute video of the event.

Pillow Fight at Auditorium Shores in Austin

After watching the video and seeing the pictures, I’m almost regretting not going — I mean, just look at all those Liberals and hippies in one spot. I could have beat them mercilessly without fear of litigation or retribution. How often do you get the chance to hit a Liberal and not face prosecution (answer: never)?

If I had shown up wearing this t-shirt, things would have been even more fun.

From the Austinist follow-up story:

I was there and it was super. Just super. After my roommate tuckered out, I stole her pillow and started in on the melee. Then I saw this cute red-headed girl in an awesome blue dress and brown boots. I even got to sock her with the pillow once or twice. If you’re reading this blue-dress girl, you should call me for a rematch.

Or she should call the police and take out a restraining order.

This person was there, too:

oh my god tonight was sooo much fun, me mike, bil, brock, armando, and cole all went to the first annual austin pillow fight! there was like 200+ peps there. it was fucking crazy i laid it down for some bitch asses. fuck yeah. man that was sooo much fun, i wish you guys couldve been there.

Wow. Now I really wish I wouldn’t have missed it.

  2. You’ve been married too long. Don’t you suppose the whole purpose of this was to meet girls?

  3. Back when I was a college kid (and not married), I never would have thought of hitting a girl (literally) as a means of hitting on a girl.

But then again, I would imagine that the kind of guy who would attend a pillow fight as a means to meeting girls is exactly the kind of guy who has already exhausted all other normal or conventional means of hooking up.

    Case in point:

    Hippie Pillow Fighter

Maybe hippie chicks are just attracted to the scent of “desperation” more than others.

  4. I don’t know how to say this in a nice way but you spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about the behavior of other people. Who cares if they have a pillow fight?

As for the participants: do you really believe that these were ‘hippies’? It sounds like classic frat boy antics to me. And it’s nonsense to say that there were not Young Republicans there as if that’s some point of pride.

  5. I’m not worrying about their behavior. I’m simply laughing at them.

As far as the demographics of the crowd — yeah, I live in Austin. I know exactly the kinds of kids that turn out for “events” like these. The same ones getting stoned and banging drums at the annual Eyor’s Birthday Party or playing Ren Fest with each other at the park every weekend.

  6. At least their fun, however juvenile, is not as violent as that of the Duke LaCrosse Team.

  7. Preston/Pre School

As a very very active participant in this forum, it seems you also spen much time worrying about the behaviour/views of others.

if you want to ‘mellow’ out and get all ‘far out’ enough with the hypocritical lectures huh?

    Peace dude.

  8. They should at least make it interesting and get up to speed on how you’re really supposed to pillow fight:

I guess you could say sluggin is the conservative version of pillow fighting.

  9. Sam, you might have to provide an example- unless you believe that an opinion on, say, the legality of warrantless wiretapping is just worrying about the behaviour/views of others. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

  10. You want an example pre school? Count 7 posts above this one.

  11. Hmm… Does it seem equivilent to you? If so, I apologize to Robbie for infringing his right to bitch about other people going about their business. He is, afterall, just going about his own business (of bitching about other people…)

And Sam, a little tip- the ‘pre-school’ bit really doesn’t make you seem more clever. But I won’t infringe on your right to make a jackass of yourself.

  12. One note:

I love how we’ve captured the dynamic of half of the right-left disputes here. ‘Conservatives’ begin by engaging in some activity that infringes on the rights of others: say, attacking the right to have a pillow fight or dumping pollutants into the air we all have to breathe.

The left responds to the transgression by, say, regulating pollution or saying ‘mind your own business’.

The right responds by saying the left is ‘crushing my freedom’ (to put waste into the air or ridicule people going about their business).

So congratulations, Sam, you’ve received an A in the Atwater/Rove School of Right Wing Talking Points!

  13. Pre School,

I am glad you are not going to infringe my rights. Thanks. As for the Pre School bit, its just an observation based on a few of your posts. It is however, ONLY an observation, not a request to change your ways. As far as I’m concerned, you can cry like a baby and stomp your feet all day.

  14. Huh? You lost me Preston. But then, I’m totally lost in the political arena these days but not as bad as some other people. The other day my daughter was having a garage sale. One of her friends was helping her. My daughter is pretty up on politics and trained well, she is pretty conservative.

Discussion with her friend goes like this.

Daughter: ” I heard today that Michael Moore owns stock in Halliburton. Can you believe that!”
    Friend: ” Who’s Michael Moore?”
Daughter: “You know, remember when we talked about Farenheit 911?”
    Friend: “Oh yeah.”
Daughter: “Well he’s that nutcase liberal that did the movie and now we find out he owns stock in Halliburton.”
    Friend: “I don’t understand.”
Daughter: Sighing..”He blamed everything on Halliburton. The liberals are always bitching about Halliburton.”
    Friend: “What’s a liberal?”
Daughter: “You know, they’re the people that want socialism here like they have in Europe”
    Friend: “I don’t undertand”
Daughter: “Never mind, hand me that crock pot.”

    Lol…maybe ignorance is bliss

  16. Preston…that’s my favorite comment from anybody on any topic in a very long time.

  17. Thanks, Robbie. I know everyone doesn’t share my interest in politics- but they should! How’s that for being a busybody? And I’m serious. Kind of. But even if politics aren’t your thing I’d think that you pick up information inadvertantly in the way that I somehow know who ‘Nick and Jessica’ are despite my utter lack of interest.

Dianne. In a way I was just trying to convey the strategies of Lee Atwater and his protoge Karl Rove: attack the opponent’s strength. This is how the GOP can give almost half of the 2002 tax cut to the top 1% and attack criticism of this policy as ‘class warfare’ It’s how George Bush and his questionable service record could paint John Kerry as a coward.

Charges that you would have thought were jaw dropping in their audacity become conventional wisdom.

  18. Preston…Thanks, now I understand what you’re talking about, although your examples are debatable depending on the context. In the end, the rich get richer, low incomes pay little or nothing and the middle class always get screwed by both parties. Can debate that another time.

Daughter’s friend has no worries..her caregiver looks like a movie star and brings home the bacon..lol

    Posted by dianne | April 9, 2006, 11:19 pm
  19. FYI- the poorest 20% pay nearly as high of percentage a percentage of their income in taxes as the rich. Yes, the middle class gets the worst deal.

FWIW- when someone is citing tax statistics to you that say the poor don’t pay taxes you know they have an agenda. The fact is that payroll taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, and fees are regressive and borne more heavily by the poor and middle class.
