Austin: Prop 1 and 2 Soundly Defeated

Elitist Liberal Whining Ensues

On Saturday, Austinites went to the polls and soundly defeated the two propositions that were put on the ballot by a coalition of activists, most notable of which was the Save our Springs Alliance (the “frog-fondlers”, according to Stateman columnist John Kelso).

These two “progressive” propositions were defeated by 76% and 69% “Against” totals. These two propositions were even more unpopular amongst Austin voters than President Bush’ current approval rating. And that ain’t good.

Of course the proponents these two failed propositions are in full-blown whine mode and denial about the outcome. In typical liberal elitism, they’re claiming that their efforst failed because the rest of us were either “duped” by the opposition, or we were just too stupid to “get it”:

Now, it’s true that my neighbors may not have had the time to go through all the amendments and really understand what they were voting on but I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and at least assume that there was a cursory examination. So, in my precinct, located in the 78704 zipcode, the supposed hub of granola-crunching, tree-hugging environmentalism of Austin; Progressivism has died not by kicking and screaming, but by a flat-out majority suffocation. It seems to have been replaced by what I’ll call “Closet Conservatism.”

Watching the elections returns Saturday night on News 8 Austin, I watched as Medora Barkley, a Clean Austin.org volunteer, nearly broke down in tears as she whined, “We’re not going to have the city we have today 20 years from now.” And S.O.S Alliance volunteer Robbin Trusty said she believes people who’ve recently moved to Austin “don’t know the history and the importance of protecting our natural resources.”

One of the worst ways to sway voters over to your side is to call them “stupid” or “uninformed” when they disagree with you. Until the elitist left learns that lesson, they’ll continue to get their asses handed to them in elections.
