WMDs found in Iraq
Why is it that bad news for Saddam and terrorists almost always equals bad news for Democrats and good news for Republicans? (that’s a rhetorical question)
There’s never been any doubt that Saddam had WMD at some time, nor any doubt about his willingness to use them (own his own people, no less). There’s never been any doubt that Saddam intentionally lied to and deliberatly deceived UN weapons insepectors.
Anybody with more than 2 functioning braincells can logically understand that Saddam was trying to reconstitute his WMD program after the 1991 Gulf War. To believe otherwise is — as Austin Bay puts it — “to put you in league with goofs like Michael Moore and George Galloway”:
Barnes noted Saddam’s chemical weapons program could have been cranked up quickly. That’s correct. Saddam played games with UN inspectors and was playing possum with his nuclear and chemical programs. This is not a large trove of weapons. Artillery rounds are tactical weapons–but nerve gas is still nerve gas and it puzzles me as to why this information took so long to release.
UPDATE 2: If this pans out the categorical statements that “Iraq did not have Weapons of Mass Destruction†will be political millstones and albatrosses. I suspect KosKidz and the like will note observations like mine that 500 shells is not a large stockpile. It’s not, but that’s consolation only for the most cynical of spinners and superficial of reporters. I suspect one conspiracy theory we’ll hear is that the shells were planted by the CIA or Pentagon– how long before that crops up?
This is good news for the US, because it validates our intelligence community. It’s good news for the US because it helps justify the US’s position for War in the eyes of the UN and other doubting nations. But rather than seeing this as good news for the US, the Left will find a way to spin it, discount it, or otherwise be the wrong side of right. Again.
At least they still have “Blood for Oil” to hang on to.

Does this change anyone’s opinion on whether WMD were found? To the vast majority of media types, I believe the answer is no - as if the factual determination that WMD were discovered, it would undermine and obliterate the whole no WMD - Bush lied meme. For those who followed the various stories reporting scattered WMD finds (via Junkyard Blog), this is not news at all. This is yet another confirmation of the facts.
I can just imagine what Kerry and Murtha’s response to this will be. Something along the lines of, “Oh, shit. We better cut and run before we find anymore.”

MORE: The Confederate Yankee wonders why more people aren’t talking about this story.
Apparently he hasn’t checked the front page of Memorandum this morning — it looks like the only thing bloggers are talking about.
Oh, wait.
He wonders why more people in the MSM aren’t talking about it. Well, CY, that’s because they haven’t found a way yet to spin it to bash our troops or to put them in further harm’s way.

I suspect the reason that nobody except a few irrelevant right-wingers are talking about it is that when contacted about Ricky’s latest desperation move (he’s losing his senate race), a Defense Department official told Fox News flatly that the munitions hyped by Santorum and Hoekstra are “not the WMD’s for which this country went to war.†This is old, unimportant stuff.
