An overwhelming majority of Soldiers in the US Army vote Republican.

If you listen to liberal whiners, you’d believe the only reason that most Service personel vote Republican is because they are not smart enough to be Democrats — they’re simpletons; uneducated dupes (when the truth is quite the opposite: 98% of US Soldiers joined with high-school diplomas or better. By comparison, only 75% of the general population meets that standard).

Let’s face it…the Left has been beating the “the military exploits the poorest and least educated” meme for a long time (despite it being a bald-faced lie).

Robert D. Kaplan at the Dallas Morning News believes that today’s Soliders follow an ancient, elite code of honor and duty. And that the Democrats just don’t get it.

This comment sums up the sentiment of many of today’s Soldiers — and all of the ones that I know:

Truly, Vietnam has been discussed ad nauseam, especially in the 2004 presidential campaign. But the aspect of Vietnam that helps reveal why the grunts are so alienated from the political elite – and particularly from the Democratic Party – has rarely been discussed at all.

While left-wing elites continue to refer to the Vietnam War as wrong and dishonorable, it happens to be the war where the antique code of honor had its birth for the present generation of American soldiery. It’s also the war of which the forebears of those now fighting in front-line units in Iraq harbor the keenest memories. As one Mexican-American Marine sergeant explained to me, fighting in Iraq was the only way he could prove to his uncle, a Vietnam veteran, that he was worthy of his legacy.

When I asked another Marine in Iraq why he hated Mr. Kerry so much, he snapped, “Because he wasn’t proud of his service in Vietnam – he threw away his medals at a demonstration that only rich kids went to.” (Actually, Mr. Kerry only pretended to throw them away, but this Marine did not know that.)

Strawman

Lord, I know it’s not worth trying, but:
Every person wants to be relevant.
This includes people who join the military.
To make the military ‘relevant’ requires an active military policy.
Republicans pursue a more active military policy.

I’m sure if you survey the State Department and the Diplomatic Corp it would lean Democratic because Democratic leadership gives more relevence to the people working in these positions.

But you can rely on your stereotypes and self-congratulating hypotheses if you prefer.

I retired from the Air Force in 1994. While I don’t think it rose to the level of ‘hate’ back then, most military members I knew (officer and enlisted) were politically conservative.

The core message of the left to any individual is you are a victim, you are oppressed, you need our help, your failings are not your fault. These all run contrary to the general military philosphy which says the individual is powerful and that the individual is personally responsible for his or her actions.

To a man every Viet Nam veteran I know hates John Kerry for his blood libels against the other officers in his own unit as well as all other Viet Nam vets.

Wouldn’t only be a libel if no atrocities had been committed in Vietnam? Or if fellow soldiers had not reported these crimes to Senator Kerry?

Surely, it can be agreed- regardless of your opinion of the war’s justifications- that there were instances of crimes. It could only be expected if you have 500,000 young men- to say nothing of the difficult situations in which they found themselves.

Preston, Kerry was not a senator at the time. Nobody reported crimes to him. His statements before the panel were for the most part, lies and fabrications. Nobody disputes that there were cases of unacceptable warfare, but not to the extent Kerry so passionately advocated.

John Kerry was reporting on the Winter Soldier Investigations.

This is what was reported at that event:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Soldier_Investigation

Testimony given during the three day event covered both broad policy concerns, such as the use of chemical agents, indiscriminate bombing, and free-fire zones as well as more specific and unusual war crime incidents, including rape, torture and desecration of the dead. … While only 109 veterans gave testimony, over 700 veterans attended the hearing. Excerpts from the testimony transcripts:
Stephen Craig: “…My testimony covers the maltreatment of prisoners, the suspects actually, and a convoy running down an old woman with no reason at all…”
Rusty Sachs: “…my testimony concerns the leveling of villages for no valid reason, throwing Viet Cong suspects from the aircraft after binding them and gagging them with copper wire…”
Scott Camil: “…My testimony involves burning of villages with civilians in them, the cutting off of ears, cutting off of heads, torturing of prisoners, calling in of artillery on villages for games, corpsmen killing wounded prisoners…”
Kenneth Campbell: “…My testimony will consist of eyewitnessing and participating in the calling in of artillery on undefended villages, mutilation of bodies, killing of civilians, mistreatment of civilians…”
Fred Nienke: “…My testimony includes killing of non-combatants, destruction of Vietnamese property and livestock, use of chemical agents and the use of torture in interpreting prisoners…”

I’m not sure what the basis of you claiming that ‘nobody reported crimes to him’ is.

[...] Is it any wonder why Today’s Soldiers Hate the Democrat Party? [...]
