I started reading Arthur Silber’s post, I Give Up: Go Ahead and Lose, Dems, to see why a far-left liberal blogger thinks the Democrats are heading down a losing path. In an otherwise rambling post, I found the clear answer:
In short: THE DEMOCRATS ARE ENTIRELY UNPREPARED. THEY HAVE NO ANSWER.
Silber’s post led me to another interesting post from a self-described gay anarchist liberal, IOZ at Who Is IOZ, who wants to know, What the fuck is a Progressive?:
The pallid young Democrats flocking to the term these days would be no more reconizeable (or acceptable) to the Debsian progressives of American history than would George W. Bush’s Republican Party be to Lincoln. These are not radicals, these Democrats and YearklyKossians and FireDogLakers and KillJoeLiebermaniacs. These are the mainstream supporters of a mainstream corporate party who believe that their flinching support for a woman’s right to have her fetus extracted, their tepid and unconvincing belief that foreign intervention generally rocks, except when done “incompetently” or based on lies less palatable than those of, say, William Jefferson Clinton, and their conviction that if we would just pay the poor fuckers who sling burgers at Wendy’s ten bucks an hour, the rising tide would lift all ships, etc. etc. and so forth and so on.
The observations in that single, well-written paragraph furthers my belief that the Democrat Party is moving — nay, running (at breakneck speed) — to the extreme left. The myth of a “moderate Democrat” is becoming as laughable and as rare as the myth of a “moderate Muslim”.
IOZ has a great term for these new, mainstream/majority paty members: Ahem-Progressives
Ahem-Progressives seek institutional power for their own brand. That is all. There’s nothing progressive about it. The progress they dream of is reascension to the bridge of the ship of state. There, they shall make small course corrections and call it a fucking day.

Thanks for the links.
Neither Arthur Silber nor I would self-apply “liberal,” though. Arthur is a very staunch libertarian in the true sense of the word; he was, in fact, a disciple of Ayn Rand for some time, although he’s come to repudiate much of her work, particularly as regards art and psychology. I myself would say anarchist-libertarian. Neither of us believes in the economic statism embraced by standard American liberalism. My point in the above-cited paragraph (thank you for the compliment, btw), was not that I want Eugene Debs to rise from the grave and take the reins of power for the proles, or what have you, but rather that the term “progressive,” properly applied, means that precisely. One does not become a “progressive” by voting against Joe Lieberman any more than one becomes a monarchist by visiting Windsor Palace.
Thanks for some of those clarifications, IOZ.
I read through several of your other posts — while our politics don’t exactly lineup, I find your writing style and prose to be exceptionally interesting and remarkably readable.
I appreciate good, smart, and witty writing. Your writing fits that bill nicely.
The message of the Democratic party is coming through loud and clear and the message is constitutional privacy rights. Trouble is, the majority of Americans would rather have their ass protected and don’t care if “big brother” listens in to the conversations some of them may have with a long lost relative in Iran. The majority of Americans expect to be carded when they order a drink and really don’t care if they have to present the same ID when they vote. The majority of Americans realize that the greatest threat they have to their privacy is a hack or illegal stealing their identity.
