Richard Cohen in the Washington Post:
The greatest mistake Israel could make at the moment is to forget that Israel itself is a mistake.
Un-freakin’-believable.
Richard Cohen is being dissassembled by the blogoshphere (rightly so):
- Judith at Kesher Talk (news and views from a hawkish, liberal, Jewish perspective) pretty much tears Richard Cohen a new asshole using something totally missing from Cohen’s anti-semitic rant: facts — Great, now we have Richard Cohen in the WaPo questioning Israel’s legitimacy, using the threadbare revisionist history of 30 years of Islamist-funded university Middle East History Departments.
- Meryl Yourish — Ignorant man: Read your Torah. Read your history. A nation of Jews existed millennia before Islam was invented.

I’m sure there are good rebuttals against Cohen’s op-ed but I don’t think you’ve linked to them. The blogs seem to feel that Cohen’s assertion that placing a Jewish state in predominantly Muslim land is refuted by the fact the Jews were there first. By the same logic couldn’t Native Americans set up a nation on Manhattan Island?
I seriously doubt that Cohen is ignorant of the fact that the Jews were there for a 1000 years before the Muslims (whatever that means- in all likelihood they share anscestors)
Cohen’s point that the Israelis were European is quibbled with but it seems the effect remains the same even if only half of the Jews were European.
(I did find the comparison between Arab Muslims and Southern whites provocative though I don’t know enough about the people to know if that’s true.)
