Billy Shore, writing for the NY Times, was aboard a flight that was transporting the body of a fallen Marine from Boston to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. He has written a thoughtful tribute to the moment. This paragraph stood out and really rang true for me:
Except for a handful of us standing frozen at a respectful distance from the window, the war and its carnage might as well have been on another planet. The disconnect between those who serve and those of us who are beneficiaries of their service has always felt great to me, but never greater than at that moment.
Bill, the disconnect that you feel is very real, and it’s also felt in return from those of us who have served and those who have not.
