Am I the only person watching the new docu-reality show on A&E about Gene Simmons and his family (Gene Simmons Family Jewels)?
The premise is essentially the same as The Osbournes, with cameras following Simmons and his family around to document their home life — except the Simmons family is exceptionally likeable, funny, smart, and…well…normal; this show is surpisingly entertaining and watchable.
Especially Gene’s kids, 17-year old Nick and 14- year old Sophie. We’ve watched several episodes, and I’m struck at how well adjusted, funny, and smart they are. And how well they get along with their parents (both of them).
There seems to be a lot of genuine love and respect in the Simmons family…they all really seem to like each other. Nick might be the most likeable 17-year kid I’ve seen or met in a very long time.
Gene is unexpectedly self-effacing, and really seems to enjoy having his kids treat him more like a goofy parent than the Demon of Rock.
Funniest quote from last night’s episode, where Gene is filming a PSA for Planned Parenthood:
Sophie: “Dad doing a commercial about safe sex is like…”
Nick: “Barney selling Heineken to minors.”

ABOUT Gene Simmons — Born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel, Simmons immigrated to New York City in 1957 with his mother—a Hungarian immigrant and the only member of her family to survive the Holocaust—after his father, Feri Witz, abandoned his family.
He is classified as a Libertarian Republican (no wonder I like the show).

He’s also kind of a dick but I’ll give him credit for his Andy Kaufman-like appearance on Fresh Air with Terry Gross.
