Sounds like Castro might not be long for this world. I hope his death is quick and soon. Mostly soon. I can’t imagine that communism lasts much longer after Papa Castro shuffles off this mortal coil.
I think all one really needs to know about the era of Castro and its devestating effect on the people of Cuba is to witness the reactions of those who have escaped:
“There will be no sleep in Miami tonight…You can here the shouts of “Libertad! Libertad! Libertad!’ in the background on the news reports. It is, indeed, a joyous occassion. But I’d like all of you to know that behind each celebratory scream, behind every smile, behind every feeling of unbridled joy and desperate happiness, there are 47 years of tears. Forty seven years of frustration. Of anger. Of pain. Of loss. Of separated families and drowned brothers and sisters. These celebrations have been paid for in blood. And they are more than well deserved.”

Indeed. Let’s hope democratic change comes quickly and peacefully to Cuba.
(not least of all, because I’m dying to visit Havana…)
(As an aside, right-wing concern for the oppressed of Cuba has always seemed anomalous given the silence regarding other Latin American dictatorships. But in any case, we should all be glad and hopeful for a better future in Cuba.)
