AllahPundit at Hot Air has this video of Rep. Charlie Rangel denigrating our troops (again):
I want to make it abundantly clear: if there’s anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment. If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.
It was less than a month ago that Sen. John Kerry (D–MA) called our brave men and women in the military stupid. Now, we have Rep. Charlie — fresh on the heels of insulting the fine folks of Mississippi — once again perpetuating the Left’s favorite anti-military myth: that the US Military is disproportionately comprised of uneducated, poor, and easily duped minorities who had no better options than joining the military.
The Left so wants this to be true, because they just can’t fathom the truth: that there are numerous men and women better than themselves who willingly and knowingly volunteer to defend their country as their first career option. This Heritage Foundation report — which I’ve written about here and here — debunks this myth with facts.
This report has been out for nearly two years now, and I have yet to see anybody refute the data.
It’s also telling that the Left doesn’t see a career of military service as a decent career. I’d counter that on the scale of all career choices, I’d place a career of military service as the pinnacle of noble, dignified, and decent careers. Conversely, I’d place a lifetime career as a teat-sucking politician somewhere near the very bottom. Just above kiddie-porn producer and just below political activist.
The only real myth here is that the Left “supports the troops”.

But as difficult as it must be to fight and bleed for your country and come home unappreciated and derided, it might be worse to be pitied as a hapless moron duped by the Man and used for his enrichment. Today’s warriors are facing the prospect of both.
But Rangel (D-NY) isn’t joking, as Lurch so clumsily tried to claim he was. Rangel really believes that no “bright” young person joins the armed forces.

Unless you believe the poor are somehow inferior Rangel isn’t ‘insulting’ the military. He may have a mistaken impression of that the military is composed of the very poor but that isn’t an insult.
