The Democrats ran — and won — the 2006 mid-term elections by standing on the back of a solid platform of promised change.
Amongst those things promised by the Dems — the promises which got them elected — but which the Dems have already lied about or broken their promises (and this is just before they’ve even officially taken power):
- A promise to follow and implement ALL of the 9/11 Commission Report’s recommendations. We now know that this is not true.
- A promise from Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi to “clean the swamp” of corruption. With her initial backing of Rep. Jack “Back Room Deal” Murtha for House Marjority Leader, and her desire to appoint impeached former-judge Alcee Hastings as Chair of the House Intel Committee — well, despite her wishes getting shot down, this doesn’t bode well of her promised intentions.
- A promise for more openness in our government. Harry Reid talked about the need for sunlight shortly after winning the majority. He said it meant “finding out what government is doing.” But of course, we now know that this was a lie too, as Harry Reid’s already called for a closed-door meeting of all 100 Senators as the very first order of business in the 110th Congress.
Reid is calling this most recent broken promise a “a joint caucus meeting” for senators only. Even the Washington Post is calling bullshit on this phraseology:
But Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, called it a bad precedent.
“When you get all 100 members of the Senate in a room, that’s no longer a caucus. That’s the Senate,” she said. “I think the American people will see through that. I think the only way to restore public trust in what the Congress is up to is to have more transparency than less.”
What promise do you think the Dems will break next? Will the next broken promise occur before they take power, or can they at least hold off until January?
I’m betting on the former.

Speaking of draining the swamp, the democrats apparently only care about draining the swamp of republican reptiles.
