Gnarles BarkleyIssue 1016/1017 (double-issue) of RollingStone magazine arrived in the mail today. In it they list their 100 Best Songs of the Year.

Here are the Top 10:

  1. Crazy — Gnarles Barkley
  2. Steady As She Goes —The Raconteurs
  3. Ridin’ — Chamillionaire
  4. What You Know — T.I.
  5. Vans — The Pack
  6. Thunder on the Mountain — Bob Dylan
  7. Smile — Lily Allen
  8. Wamp, Wamp (What it do) — Clipse with Slim Thug
  9. Dimension — Wolfmother
  10. Ooh La La — Goldfrapp

Of these, I have only even heard of 2 of the artists (Barkley and Dylan). In fact of the 100 songs, I’ve never even heard of 52 of the artists who perform them.

Of the 100 songs, I purchased 6 of them to put on my Ipod:

1 Crazy — Gnarls Barkley
6 Thunder on the Mountain — Bob Dylan
29 Smiley Faces — Gnarls Barkley (because I purchased the entire Barkley album)
56 Promiscuous — Nelly Furtado with Timbaland
78 “That’s How I Got To Memphis” — Solomon Burke (only because I wanted to see how/if it compared to the song of the same name by Kelly Willis)
93 Saving Grace — Tom Petty

  1. Dude, you’re getting old.

Yeah, I haven’t read RS for years but I have to say that I’ve had ‘Steady as she Goes’ in my head all week. (That’s Jack White, of the White Stripes other band). And I was surprised not to hear ‘Ridin’ coming out of car windows all summer- it seemed like a perfect summer hit but in my neighborhood it didn’t get the same play as, say, Sean Paul did the last few summers.

As it stands my record is little better than yours- I had never heard of 5 of those artists. Oh well- I’m not trying to be 19 anymore.

  2. Political tag? Lighten up!

  3. Damn, Dan- you must be a copy editor.

  4. Politics is the default tag. I forgot to change the tag before posting. Thanks for the catch.

  5. I study every word Robbie writes!

  6. Easy, Preston…. Robbie’s just a tad younger than I am.

    (now I’m plummeting into pout-mode)

  7. I’m not that old but I haven’t heard any of them either. I must be old in spirit.

  8. Hey, I’m right there too, KW. There’s no shame in not knowing about 90% of what RS writes about. Most of it is a waste of time.
