TIME’s 2006 Person of the Year

TIME’s Person of the Year is the “person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year.”

Last year, Time awarded the Person of the Year (POY) cover to “The Samaritan“, otherwise known as Bill and Melinda Gates and Bono.

This year’s list of finalists include: President Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Condoleeza Rice, Al Gore, Hugo Chavez, Kim Jong II, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and “The YouTube guys” (because, apparently they weren’t important enough for us to even know their names, but are important enough to be the Person of the Year at Time).

From the list of finalists and given TIME’s criteria, I think Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi should be TIME’s POY.

Why Pelosi?

The mid-term elections and the shift in Congressional and Senate power back to the Democratic party definitely embodies what was the most important event of 2006. And Nancy is clearly the face (and now the voice) of that shift.

And this event doesn’t just impact the lives of American citizens. Terrorists cheered the election returns. Hamas is already meeting with Democratic party officials (allegedly) to help them obliterate Israel. European Socialists are eager to work with U.S. Democrats.

It’s clear that TIME wants (and has probably already selected Pelosi). They’ve used her mug for just about all the promos for the annual award.

and

However, voters seem to have a different idea:

Pelosi is currently only running 6th out of the 8 finalist (2 pts behind the “YouTube guys”).

Who is your Person of the Year? Someone else on TIME’s list? Somebody(s) not listed? My personal POY for 2006 is the Patriot Guard Riders. (I’ll link to that post once I’ve written it).

  1. Of the list, I also agree with Pelosi. On the positive side she is the first woman Speaker of the House and you have to give her credit for that.

I sincerely hope that the Democrats will do something positive for this country. If they don’t, we’ll all pay the price. I have to admit I’m really worried, way more so than if Bill Clinton was the President. I’m worried because I see so much changing in this country which is not good and I hope we get back on track and unite. I have to say I hold out a ray of hope with the Blue Dog Democrats. I think they may be the key to it all.

  2. before saying that the democrats are meeting with terrorists, you should have some solid proof of this. dont use that article by a newspaper in Israel, which of course was retracted for unknown reasons. all your doing is adding fuel to a fire that might not even exist.

  3. Why hold me to a higher standard of proof than…oh,say…the Associated (w/terrorist) Press?

The AP won’t produce its star source, Jamil Hussein, the policeman that neither the Iraqi Ministry of Interior nor CENTCOM can find record of, any of the immolated bodies or their names, the names and credentials of the local Iraqis the AP used as reporters of the incident and the AP’s follow-up, the purported conveniently located afterward anonymous witnesses, nor any Sunni leaders who are aware of the claimed incident.”

Besides, I didn’t just “make this up”. I pulled it from other MSM sources.

  4. I think Bush should be the Man of the Year. He caused congress to change, cost us billions of dollars fighting a senseless and optional war, he led hundreds of our soldiers to their death, and united our country in near-unanimous rejection of his policies. Heck of a job, Bushie.
