The Democrats ran — and won — the 2006 mid-term elections by standing on the back of a solid platform of promised change.

Amongst those things promised by the Dems — the promises which got them elected — but which the Dems have already lied about or broken their promises (and this is just before they’ve even officially taken power):

  • A promise to follow and implement ALL of the 9/11 Commission Report’s recommendations. We now know that this is not true.
  • A promise from Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi to “clean the swamp” of corruption. With her initial backing of Rep. Jack “Back Room Deal” Murtha for House Majority Leader, and her desire to appoint impeached former-judge Alcee Hastings as Chair of the House Intel Committee — well, despite her wishes getting shot down, this doesn’t bode well of her promised intentions.
  • A promise for more openness in our government. Harry Reid talked about the need for sunlight shortly after winning the majority. He said it meant “finding out what government is doing.” But of course, we now know that this was a lie too, as Harry Reid’s already called for a closed-door meeting of all 100 Senators as the very first order of business in the 110th Congress.

Reid is calling this most recent broken promise a “a joint caucus meeting” for senators only. Even the Washington Post is calling bullshit on this phraseology:

But Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, called it a bad precedent.

“When you get all 100 members of the Senate in a room, that’s no longer a caucus. That’s the Senate,” she said. “I think the American people will see through that. I think the only way to restore public trust in what the Congress is up to is to have more transparency than less.”

What promise do you think the Dems will break next? Will the next broken promise occur before they take power, or can they at least hold off until January?

I’m betting on the former.

  1. Speaking of draining the swamp, the democrats apparently only care about draining the swamp of republican reptiles.

  2. Have to admit I know the Democratic party wasn’t supporting him but it just goes to show you how people think. Even Ray Nagin supported him. Just like the Marion Barry situation. As long as the people think he can do for them, they don’t care if he steals or whatever. Pathetic.

  3. Do you have any quotes of Nancy Pelosi suggesting that she wanted Hastings to lead the intelligence committee?

  4. Furthermore, could you tell me the greatest threat to an ethical Congress posed by placing Murtha in the Majority Leader position?

  5. I’ve taken ethics training. We had about 20 professional people in our group. One would think that ethics is straightforward. It’s not. Of the 20 people in our group, we never, not once, agreed on what the ethical position was with respect to a given situation. We were a fairly homogenous group of people. Ethics is even more cloudy when it comes to nonhomogenous groups.

Conclusion: There is no such thing as an ethical Congress.

  6. Wow, Dianne that very relativistic of you!

    :)

  7. I’ve been called worse, Preston..lol

Well, everything is relative isn’t it. What’s ethical to me is not to thee (speaking of anyone else). There’s a line, however, between the law and between ethics. I guess that’s what the Foley committee found – no law breaking, but ethical concerns. One could argue, however, that it was also not ethical for certain democratic operatives to blow the ethics whistle right before the election. I’m sure you could come back with republican examples, but the point is both parties are regularly guilty of not playing it ethically straight.
