This is pretty cool:

Two more University of Texas branches have announced financial aid packages guaranteeing free tuition for Texans whose families earn $25,000 or less per year.

The UT-Dallas Tuition Promise applies to new, full-time undergraduate students. To remain eligible, students must complete 30 credit hours each year with a minimum 2.5 term and cumulative grade point average, and must continue to meet income and grant eligibility requirements.

Under a similar program at UT-Arlington called the Maverick Promise, the university will pay the difference between Pell grant awards and total in-state tuition and mandatory fees.

Both programs, which were announced this week, go into effect this fall.

The University of Texas at San Antonio and UT-Tyler earlier announced similar free-tuition programs.

The downside is that you’d still have to live in the Dallas area…

That’s great.

I don’t think it’s great. What about the poor schmuck who makes $30,000/year. He absolutely cannot afford to send his kid to college but the guy who makes $5,000/year less gets a free ride. Even $50,000/yr family of 4 would not be able to write the check without giving up necessities.

I think there should be a graduated scale that all families up to a certain point would get aid based on their income. The $25,000 might get 70 percent, the $40,000 50 percent and so on. College students can work and at least pay a bit of their expenses while still going to school. We did. They can.

The way the system is set up now the poor get everything free and the lower middle class and middle class get practically nothing and have to pay for those who don’t pay anything. It’s not fair.

Dianne- I agree with that, but you’re making a lot of assumptions from a three paragraph item in the AP. But it all sort of depends on tuition doesn’t?

Preston - My last paragraph was generic and relates to all kinds of aid programs, public and private.

I want to know if the scholarship is available to international student, am in Ghana

Got something you want to say?
