Firstly, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Mark Daly. He clearly was a considerate man.

Using the words of a dead man may be considered a questionable proponent for war. However, Mr Daly said that he was not alone in his beliefs and we can assume that currently living soldiers still feel as he once did.

Wow. This was an intelligent, articulate, courageous and clearly brilliant young man. I cannot argue with a decision that is made in the context of that much reflection and critical soul-searching.

His points about our sense of entitlement and luxury in this country are also well-taken. I think that anyone who goes to a "protest" needs to have a clear and thoughtful sense of intention about why they are there. Instead of wrathfully attacking the president, we ought to be creating a positive plan for creative resolution, in our personal lives, in our civic lives, and in our nation.

With that said, I have to say that I don't quite see things through the same, "we're good, those guys are bad," black vs white filters. I have seen too much incontrovertible evidence that we were misled about a lot of things in order to whip up support for what I consider an ill-advised war. Had 2Lt Daily been this fired up to go after Osama in Afghanistan and bring him to justice for 9/11, that's one thing. To have the president and his colleagues cook up a huge PR campaign to link Iraq to 9/11 and then shift the entire focus of our military efforts, for reasons that have yet to be clearly explained, I'm sorry. Can't buy it.

No matter the politics of the situation, I'm deeply saddened by the loss of a noble young man.
