Paul Whitefield, who supervises the editorial pages’ copy desk at the LA Times, has decided to mock Vietnam veterans in this ill-attempt at humor.
In his “modest proposal”, he suggest that the 21K troop surge should be comprised of Vietnam vets. He then proceeds to pile insult-upon-insult to those same vets.
Go read his ramblings first, then check out what these Vietnam vets have to say about Mr. Whitefield:
And here’s the thoughts of a few others (hint: nobody’s happy):
Judge for yourself, but the Vietnam veterans who called the program today after I read it in its entirety were not amused.
Mr. Whitefield declined the opportunity to appear on the program.

It is possible that Mr. Whitefield is a 60-something Vietnam vet, but I am betting he’s around 30, graduated from a small liberal arts college, and knows no one in the military today, much less any Vietnam veterans.
My other guess is that his e-mail is paul.whitefield@latimes.com.
Even Liberal bloggers are heaping on (from the Gun Toting Liberal):
…has got to be one of the sickest forms of thought I’ve come across in a long time.
It’s not long, but gets right to the point. And the point is: how low can a person go with their political agenda, or, a sick sense of humor. Either way, it isn’t funny. In fact, it is tasteless and disrespectful, not only to those veterans still alive, but to those whose names are on that wall in Washington.
I checked the message board at the Patriot Guard Riders forum, where most of the riders are Harely riding Vietnam vets. They are not happy with Mr. Whitefield either.

This sounds like something a smart ass college freshman would write, but it’s from the LA Times! Kudos to the Gun Toting Liberal blog for calling them out.
