Saddam's neckA new, grainy video (apparently from another camera phone) has surfaced today on a Shia website, after which it was uploaded to Google (click on the image to view the actual video).

The video is somewhat graphic in that it shows what a tight rope will do to a person’s neck. Are these video’s a bit gruesome? Yes, but I’m also glad that they exist — as I believe that the punishment that Saddam received was just and merciful compared to anything he ever allowed to those who oppossed him.

  1. Gruesome? I don’t think so. Imagine if you or your family were one of his victims and you had to see him still alive and carrying on like he did. *That* would be gruesome.

I don’t know about you, but when ever I see photos of dead head nazis — those hung at Nuremberg, those who committed suicide, and those hung by the Poles, it gives me both a sense of pleasure and peace.

  2. The wisdom of the trials at Nuremburg or the reconcilliation in South Africa was to use a civil procedure to put violence in the past leading to a better, more just future.

Whatever it’s worth in providing justice (at least for the 150 Shia) it appears the execution has been a tremendous failure in any effort in bring together Iraq peacefully. In the wake of different sects using this as a bludgeon against each other I don’t see how you can claim Saddam’s execution was helpful to Iraq.

Oh, bullshit! It was a better future for the majority of the nazi criminals. It was never a better future for their victims who saw most of the murderers die of old age or with only their proverbial hands slapped. That’s not justice. And damn right I can see Saddam’s execution as beneficial. Only you and your hate America crowd would see it otherwise. Your knee must get tired jerking all the time.

  4. An evil man who had no concern for the torture of innocent men, women and children died a merciful death by comparison. However, it did no good to show his execution because it only garnered sympathy and support for him.

Only by those who weren’t his victims or oppose the death penalty under any circumstances. His execution was quick and painless.

Obviously, the post WWII trials were not extensive enough. The Cold War pretty much nipped that in the bud.

Look, I’m sure it is viscerally satisfying to see Saddam dead but the way it was conducted was a fiasco. Open your eyes: Execution sparks broad support for Saddam in Arab world

Only you and your hate America crowd would see it otherwise.
Lastly, shove it. You don’t have any idea what it is to honor the values of this country.

  7. Just to be clear, the American values I’m referring to include not labeling political opponents ‘traitors’. Not only does the ad hominem attack dishonor over 2 centuries of American political culture but it signals to all impartial observers that you have lost the debate and nothing else to say in your defense.

  8. To you an “American value” is to always portray your country and countrymen in the absolute worse light. No one’s buying your bullshit.

Try reading the article I linked to. If you disagree with its (and my) premise that the manner in which Saddam was executed has made reconciliation in Iraq more difficult try to make your point in a paragraph or two. I could be persuaded by your convincing logic.

To simply repeat tired ad hominems really shows you have nothing to add to the conversation.

  10. And before you go putting words in my mouth note that I’m not arguing that Saddam should not have been executed. I simply believe that the quality of the trial, the substance of the accusations, the date of the execution, and the manner of the execution were used as a bludgeon by Shias in the Iraqi government against Sunnis and Kurds. This will have the effect of escalating the civil war in Iraq.

    Feel free to disagree.
