Bob Parks at Black & Right recenlty wrote a column titled, NFL: The N Doesn’t Stand For National, where he writes:

So what is the real issue here? Just ask my favorite comic, Chris Rock….

“There’s black people and there’s niggas, and niggas have got to go.

Every time black people wanna have a good time, ignorant ass niggas fuck it up. Can’t do shit without some ignorant ass nigga fuckin’ it up. Can’t do nothin’. Can’t keep a disco open more than three weeks. Grand opening, grand closing. Can’t go to a movie the first week it comes out. Why? ‘Cause niggas are shooting at the screen. What kind of ignorant shit is that? Hey, this is a good movie! This is so good, I gotta bust a cap in here.

Hey, I love black people, but I hate niggas.”

I know black people around the world are going to call me an Uncle Tom for dumping on my people. I’m not dumping on my people. I’m dumping on a bunch of immature millionaires who live a dream none of us spectators can imagine.

The “N” in front of the NFL or NBA doesn’t stand for “National.” It stands for “Niggas.”

I think there’s a lot to what Mr. Parks says. And has been for a long time. Just read my last post on the NBA All-Star Weekend in Vegas, where, Bill Simmons writes:

…and since All-Star Weekend has previously proven itself as a destination spot for every gangbanger and troublemaker within a 750-mile radius

The “nigga” culture that Mr. Parks describes is a big part of why I’m tuning out the NFL and the NBA more-and-more. I’m tired of teams like the Cincinnati Benglas having 10 players arrested for various thug-crimes in a single season — and not doing a single serious thing to punsih or deter this behavior.

I’m tired of players like Pac Man Jones repeatedly getting away with criminal behavior simply because he’s a good football player. Here’s the latest — from the NBA All-Star weekend — involving Pac Man:

Jones was in Las Vegas attending the NBA All-Star game and other festivities. According to Susnar, Jones arrived at the club with several others, including the man whom eyewitnesses later identified as the shooter. Susnar said the melee broke out when Jones began throwing money into the air around strippers. ‘The dancers are supposed to dance, but not pick up money,’ Susnar said. ‘But some of the girls didn’t know that, and when one girl tried to pick up the money without Pacman giving her permission,’ he said, Jones angrily confronted the woman. When a security guard grabbed Jones, the player’s entourage jumped in, Susnar said. A woman with Jones then hit the guard over the head with a champagne bottle and Jones attacked the guard, according to Susnar.

Jones then ‘proceeded to track the same girl down,’ Susnar said. He said security staff grabbed Jones again, sparking an expletive-filled threat that he said four people witnessed. ‘He was out of his mind,’ Susnar said witnesses told him about Jones. ‘As (one security guard) held Pacman, Pacman,’ he said, threatened the guard in an expletive-laced outburst. ‘When we get him outside of the club, the guy that was sitting directly next to Pacman the entire time returns with a handgun from his car and shoots (the security guards) in the chest,’ Susnar said. ‘Maybe this is just some bizarre coincidence, that some unknown gunman would come back 10-20 minutes after we kicked Pacman out of the club and shoots my guys after (Jones’ threats), but I am going to think not.’

Look at the melee in Detroit when Pacers players went into the stands to attack fans. Look at Ray Lewis involved in an incident eerily similar to Pac Man Jones (only a knife was involved instead of a gun). It’s always one incident after another. And it’s getting worse every season.

Thank you for actually reading the column and not doing a San Diego where they claim in forums that “Columnist calls LT a nigga” which I didn’t.

My next piece will be my vindication with all that you mentioned happening in Vegas. Not like I was surprised….

Bob

right now. As much as it pains me to let opportunities go, clearly it’s a time to act with humility and accept my limited capacity, or risk serious humiliation. Got to make the ones I have happy. Here’s the weekly round-up from the blogosphere: The PR nightmare known as the NBA All Star game continues. Well covered by Urban Grounds. It’s too bad, because Pacman Jones, the NFL player involved, really caused this public image of thuggery. In fact, in my mind I feel the NFL has a much higher percentage of actual criminals per roster spot.

Got something you want to say?
