Demise of the MSM

William Arkin at the Washington Post to Soldiers: Shut up and Serve

What’s the matter with the MSM this week? Was there a behind-closed-doors meetings where all the biggest Liberal papers in America decided that this would be the week to shit all over Americas military and veterans?

Mr Arkin is a tiny man — the type who walks with his eyes down when walks down a crowded sidewalk because he is not man enough to look real men in the eyes as they pass.

I’m waiting for the Lefties to come out of the woodwork to defend this — probably with the now meaningless “speaking truth to power” talking point.

Uncle Jimbo at BlackFive:

Wow, William Arkin has just dropped a stellar entry in the biggest asshole in America contest. I was stunned by the incredible amount of disgusting, deranged, disrespectful drivel the wanker was able to cobble together in one hearty F U to the troops. Well Mr. Arkin in true blogospheric fashion F U right back atcha’. Ymarkasar, who could explain his handle, already whacked him around pretty good in the comments to Matt’s post, but I gotta bring out the big guns for this douchebag. Prepare for a full-frontal fisking with airborne envelopments and plenty of precision strike rhetoric.

That’s a pretty good intro, Uncle Jimbo — but I think this gets to the heart of the matter as to why Mr. Arkin wrote that drivel:

None of those complaining said that you [the press] had to STFU, but somehow you [Mr. Arkin] feel empowered to say that to them. STFU and just get blown up quietly. We are busy trying to lose the war back here and letting the public see that you are pissed about all the negative coverage makes that harder.

Mr. Arkin said some pretty insulting things in that anti-military screed, but none more so than this one right out of the Dick Durbin Guide to Insulting our Troops: “But it is the United States and instead this NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary – oops sorry, volunteer – force that thinks it is doing the dirty work.”

Wow. I’ll probably punch Mr. Arkin in the mouth if I ever have the misfortune of meeting him. I fully ’second’ Uncle Jimbo’s response to that particular insult:

F*** You! And I mean that in the heartiest sense of the words. F*** You Mr. Arkin. You have the right under our laws to write something like that, but you need to remember that you just crossed a line with a whole bunch of people well and truly able to make you pay for that punk ass comment.

Bingo.

You mean Preston? I’m surprised he hasn’t done so already. I always imagine him staying up all night to be first to post something snarky about the troops.

  2. Actually, no. I didn’t think of Preston at all when I wrote this piece. He’s definitely the “worthy opposition” in many regards, but I’ve never gotten the “anti-military” vibe from him that I do from a lot of other Liberals.

  3. Not even Preston would stoop to that. Right Preston??

  4. I’m not really sure what the point of the article is. I suppose it is a ham-handed attempt to discuss civilian control of the military. Or maybe it’s a piece on the desirability of a draft that puts the burden of military service on each citizen rather than a self-selected few. I don’t know. His little bit about a ‘mercenary’ army is a little glib for my taste.

I imagine he thought it was a clever twist to say that ‘the troops should support America’ and then he built a column around that. He’s going to regret this one for a while.

  5. William Arkin responds, misquotes me and further insults the troops

I should feel honored, he responded to me directly.  Of course he grossly misquoted me.
I said that he was telling the troops to shut up and quit whining, whereas he quoted me as saying that to him.
Whatever.  the point of my article was that…

  7. What’s interesting about this case is that Mr. Arkin served in the Army from 1974 tp 1978 as a counterintelligence expert.

Did he have a bad experience in the military or is it amnesia?
