I suppose it is a ham-handed attempt to discuss civilian control of the military. Or maybe it's a piece on the desirability of a draft that puts the burden of military service on each citizen rather than a self-selected few. I don't know. His little bit about a 'mercenary' army is a little glib for my taste. I imagine he thought it was a clever twist to say that 'the troops should support America' and then he built a column around that. He's going to regret this one for a while. I didn't think of Preston at all when I wrote this piece.
