Two weeks ago, I wrote a lengthy analysis of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and how he stands on various issues in the run-up to the Presidential primaries.

Today, George F. Will has published an article about Rep. Paul: A Cheerful Anachronism.

Paul thinks everyone is born an instinctive libertarian, “wanting to be let alone.” Unfortunately, “the school system beats it out of you.” Paul voted both for the ban on partial-birth abortion (a fetus is alive, leave it alone) and against the ban on same-sex marriage (none of the federal government’s business). He refused to allow any of his five children (three of whom are doctors) to accept federal student loans, and he will not accept his congressional pension.

I’m still undecided as to whether or not I’m going to support Rep. Paul in his bid for the GOP nomination…but he’s on a very short list of two right now (John McCain being the other).

______________

Here’s what other bloggers are saying about the George Will piece:

The Conservative Times:

Here is Will’s message in a nutshell; all you “eccentrics” like Paul who want to strictly interpret the Constitution may not be vilified, but you will be casually dismissed while the rest of us are about the real business of doling out the booty.

John Norris Brown at Appalachian Scribe:

I don’t agree with him on a number of (mostly foreign policy) issues. But he is one of the few elected officials who actually understands the Constitution and what the Founders really meant when they authored it. If nothing else, Paul’s candidacy might help move the GOP back towards its limited government roots. The GOP would be wise to adopt more of Paul’s principles.

  1. Who gave Congress or the President the authority to conduct a foreign policy? This is what Dr. Ron Paul is saying.

  2. Will’s piece says far more about him being a Constitutional scofflaw than Paul beign “stubborn”.

He cites Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase (which Jefferson himself recognized as unconstitutional) as justification for todays Federal Government … one that meddles in the affairs of most other nations on the planet, and the most minute details in the every day life of her own citizens all the while racking up incomprehensible debt and devaluing her currency. Of course Will likely considers trite concepts like honest money anachranistic too.

Beltway conservatives … an oxymoron of the highest order.
