Soldiers in the Sand

I clicked on this headline at the Drudge Report: Baghdad security crackdown seriously curbs killings of US soldiers…

It’s a good article — based on information disseminated by the DoD to the media — that shows another example of how the President’s surge plan is working in Iraq:

The remarkable decrease in killings among the US troops came at a time when more of these troops were deployed in the Iraqi capital, especially in districts previously regarded as extremely hazardous for them such as Al-Sadr City, Al-Azamiyah, and Al-Doura.

Meanwhile, US attacks on insurgent strongholds north of Baghdad curbed attacks against helicopters. Before the new security plan, many such craft were downed leaving 20 soldiers dead.

The US army in Iraq had earlier said that sectarian fighting and violence in Baghdad had dropped sharply, by about 80 percent, since the launch of the plan.

Did you take a good look at the source? It’s the Kuwaiti News Agency. Yeah, I noticed too. And so did Ace, who asks, “Why is it that Drudge had to find this on a foreign outlet rather than on any American news source?

Don’t worry — it’s a rhetorical question.

Hi, I think that the article you linked to is grossly in error or misleading. The article you link to states that only 17 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq from 2/14 through 3/13. The Iraq Coalition Casualties website lists 71 casualties during the same time period (27 in Baghdad), as well as the names of each soldier KIA,

Thanks, Dave

Dave — thanks for pointing that out. I checked the DoD lists myself and count 35 deaths so far in March alone. So, I’m not sure where the Kuwait story got 17 from.

They also report that there were only 42 deaths in January…but I’ve found more than 80 from DoD notices.

BTW — I see that you’re a member of the Houston PGR. I’ve ridden several missions to Houston, and my brother is still an active duty US Army recuiter in League City. Thanks for standing for those who stood for us!

I saw this on MSNBC, a major news source. Also on Yahoo! Online.

What concerns me is whether the terrorists are just lying low and waiting for this surge to blow over, or is there real progress being made. I certainly hope the latter, but dread the former.

It’s the former Nazar.

Got something you want to say?
