I think it’s important to stop and take note as the last few remaining veterans from a war that took place 90 years ago pass away:
Just hours after her picture appeared Monday on the front page of The Press with a column about a local photographer racing time to honor surviving U.S. World War I vets, Charlotte Winters died.
Winters, 109, was the last surviving American female veteran of World War I and the oldest female military veteran. Five U.S. veterans of that war still are alive.
She died at a nursing home near Boonsboro, Md., area, according to her niece.
There are only 5 remaining veterans left from WWI. I didn’t realize there were so few left. Too soon there will be none, and with them all the memories and living history from so long ago.
There is profound connection between all soldiers, regardless of when they served. It’s truly a “band of brothers”, and I’m deeply saddened to see a great generation of my fellow brothers and sisters vanish forever.

I bet Charlotte was a real firecracker in the day. A long time ago, I read about WWI veterns in the Bay area who had formed a club. I forgot the name of it, but it is where they buy a bottle of champagne and the last vetern living gets to drink it.
